I've tried searching the Lake Cty census images for 1860 but am not seeing a "Calumet." Any ideas? Bonnie
Hello Bonnie....... For starters...... why not tell us who your ancestor is...... There's several of us on this list that have a number of different Indiana databases...... I have looked in the 1860 Indiana Index and 1870 Indiana Index and can't find Calumet...... perhaps it was part of a different township at that time...... The following townships are in the bottom half of Lake Co. and you can rule them out....... Center, Cedar Lake, Crown Point, Winfield, Hanover, Lowell, West Creek, Schneider, Cedar Creek, Eagle Creek....... Interesting...... there is two [2] St John townships........ One of which is near Calumet...... You can probably rule out Dyer, Merrillville and Ross Townships........ I am sending you on a seperate e-mail a map of the Calumet area printed from my Travel Maps USA by Swift Jewel, CDR-724...... Note: There is a Calumet Aveune [running North & South in the left section of the map] Also, you cannot see it on this map..... however there is a "Little Calumet River running East and West...... just below Interstate 80 and a small community named Black Oak...... Calumet River crosses interstate 80 near Gary, IN and runs parrell to Interstate 94 and empties into Lake Michigan in Porter Co...... Hope this helps...
