Hello. I'm new to the list and I'm looking for information on Jacob and Emma/Mary Montgomery, b. approx 1860's. Jacob and his brothers William and Matt were from Indiana. Jacob's wife Emma/Mary Hoover Montgomery was from Coffey County Kansas. They had at least two children: Alta/Ellen Orlethea and Ralph born approx 1890's. Do these names ring a bell with anyone? Thanks!
I read all the messages that come to me from Indiana-L and I just had to say that I am so proud of all our members and how helpful they are to each other. Pat H. reaghgeny@aol.com
Teddy, thanks for your reply. Ed
Hello Listers, All BROWN surnames (approx 150) listed in the Delaware County, Indiana Census for 1870 can be found at website below. They are a little untidy until they are formatted to html, but useful non-the-less. ----Indiana Heritage---- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~acorntree/index.html Enjoy, Virginia
These are records that they have at the State Library. They go by county, and some counties do not have them because of court house fires. They are acutely the records, and not an index though. Teddy Searching Brady, Bruner, Ford, Fulkerson, Vertrees
Thank You Linda - I think I'll check that Tennessee birthplace out. One never knows what might find, let along WHERE. *grin* FYI: The Nancy Jane Long that was married to Huston Brown in 1866 - her father's name was Woodson Long who was married to an Anna K. Waddle. I don't have all my Nancy Jane Long stuff organized really, but I have the research and stuff in my head. Woodson was born in 1823 in Decatur County, IN and married Anna in 1844 in Bartholomew Co., IN. Anyway, there was about 13 years difference between Huston Brown and Nancy Jane Long so it's very likely this could be that the info that you just sent me IS accurate. Thanks again. ...from the book The Bound Boy by Harold D. Cromwell. [note: the book is a fictionalized biography of the life of Richard Oglesby Taylor who was sold by his father at age 11 to be a bound boy. He escaped and made his way to Kentucky where he was taken in by a couple with no children. In the 1850s he moved to Greene County, IN. The story had been handed down in the family, and the author decided to write the story about his great grandfather. According to the author, he searched for documented items and events and traveled to the sites where the events took place. Most of the data coincided with his ggrandfather's stories.] It seems that the names of people and places are probably correct, although the dialogue and details are novelized. This book is, unfortunately, no longer in print. I got it through the lending library, via the Vigo County Public Library, Terre Haute, IN] I intend to also post this to the Greene County list also, so my apologies to those who will receive it twice. If any of these names are yours, I *may* have a few details about them from the book, as I took a few notes. Let me know if you want me to check for more information about any of them. I get a LOT of emails, so please put "Some Indiana names" in the subject line so I can sort them out. ;) Ellie Worthington, IN ===================== Richard Oglesby Taylor, b. Good Morning! I can't find information on great-grandpa and wondered if I could call upon the list for some help... Huston Brown born: 1832 died: April 13, 1880 in Benton County, IA buried: Vetrans War Plot, Evergreem Cemetary Vinton, IA married: Nancy Jane Long on November 11, 1866 in Benton County (Nancy Jane was born 8-15-1845 in Decatur County, Indiana) Civil War Record - Company C 9th Cavalry Enlisted: 09-05-1863 at Nativity, KY Mustered In: 10-30-1863 Mustered Out: 02-28-1866 at Little Rock, AK * Benton County (Vinton) has no record of birth for Huston Brown - 1832 in that county * No obituary located in Benton County archives * Father mentioned briefly that his family hailed from "out East" somewhere but he didn't know where * Father mentioned that his paternal family had been in the United States since the Mayflower days (wheather he knew that for sure or his own father mentioned it at sometime while father was growing up or what---nobody knows) * We have everything you can think of about Huston Brown after the time he went into the service, including his pension records. WHAT WE ARE WONDERING......... We have a strong feeling that Huston Brown was born in Indiana and suspect that he knew Nancy Jane Long (his spouse) prior to his enlistment into the Civil War. >From the information included in this e-mail, is there anyone who can suggest how we may find out if Huston Brown was born in Indiana (probably Decatur County or in that area), who his parents might be, if he had siblings, etc.......??????????? It seems that many accurate records or even inaccurate records might not be available for the early 1800's. Thank You! Cathie repete@rconnect.com
