Hi Cathy, I would be happy to take a look for you too. What is the family name in Vermillion County? Deb
Address: 900 Webster St., Ft. Wayne, IN 46802 (219) 421-1200
Cathy, I'm sorry, but I can't read the first name either. I believe the problem is with the original copy, and not with your library's copy. The second name is also difficult to read, mainly due to the census taker's handwriting, but it almost looks like Daria age 20, born in Indiana, then there is their son Wiley E. who is 3 months or 3/12 years old and was also born in Indiana. Hope this helps! -Cindy ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! JC, the best place for you to get it is at the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne. I heard it is second only to SLC. HOST GFS Nance@aol.com
Does anyone know of a library in Indiana where I might write to purchase copies of the military record and pension papers on an individual that served in the 70th Ind Inf.? I know I can go to NARA who are now charging around $20.00 for copies. Thanks for your help. JC

In an Indiana genealogical research guide that I have, it states that naturalization records are available from 1837-1980 at Family History Library/Centers, Indiana State Library, Indiana Historical Society, and many in Allen Co. Public Library in Ft. Wayne, 900 Webster St., Ft Wayne, IN 46802, (219) 421-1200. You might want to try FHL in Evansville, Evansville-Vanderburgh County Public Library, 22 S.E. Fifth St., Evansville, IN 47708, Willard Library, Regional and Family History Center, 21 First Ave., Evansville, IN 47710, Tri-State Genealogical Society, 21 First Ave., Evansville, IN 47712, or Vanderburgh County Historical Society, 201 N.W. Fourth St., Evansville, IN 47712. Good luck, Jack, Indianapolis

YOU ASKED > << Can someone help me read the given names on this census. The copy at the > library has been scrapped. > > Helts Twp. Pg. 25 H/H 340/345 > Slater - > N??? 21 M Blacksmith VA > ??? 20 F IN > Wiley A. 3/12 M IN I looked at my on-line FTM 1850 census images for Vermillion Co. and I'm not sure either. The spot on the page there "N ??? " appears has been scratched. Or maybe the census taker wasn't sure how to spell his name and tried to erase his first efforts or wrote over it. My personal guess -- and only a guess here -- is that your Slater's name was Nehemiah. The census taker seems to have written Ne***mia with a taller letter in between. Whoever indexed the page at FTM read it as "Naumia" which doesn't look right to me. His wife's name appears to be Jane. The way they made J and I and L in those days is very similar, but I compared the first initial in her name to that of a couple of obvious J names (a John and a Josiah) and I think it's a J. As for the baby -- again, I'm guessing but I think the middle initial is a "G" and not an "A." And I don't see the "e" in Wiley. Looks more like "Wily" to me. Could he have actually been a Willy (i.e., William)?? I hope you'll get several more people's opinions on this. I tried to find a marriage record listing for them as they can't have been married for very long, -- probably in 1848 or '49 -- but although there are a lot of Slaters, I didn't see theirs. If you can find one, it might give another clue to their names. Good luck. Jeanne Surber
Hi Listers, could SKS point me in the right direction to find Naturalization records for Vanderburgh Co., my two ancestors appeared to have been there. William Lohr, Vanderburgh Co., 1853-55, Circut Court, Vol. 1, pg. 570 John Loehr, " " " " " " " " " 327 thanks, Ed Lohr Phila., Pa
