So do you also believe Genealogy should not be free???? Where do you think everyone gets the information they share? I am confused as most of the information everyone shares comes from public libraries, courts and other public accessed files. This is the only way people can obtain missing information. Where do you get your information for your research? If there was a way to obtain the information in our own hometown, there would be no need for others to share. Jan
Hello again For those of you who really want to obtain copies of Military Records, either Pension or Service records as they are both valuable sources of information, actual copies of the census sheets, DAR, SAR, passenger ship records and other information, here is a site that is well worth checking out. I have used this person many times to get copies of the records, but there is a charge. He will look for the information and tell you if he finds it, then he will make the copies and send them to you after receiving payment. I know it costs, but there is no charge if he does not find the records. I do not personally know this person and have never met him except through e-mails but have never been disappointed in the service. I have also been able to get copies of the complete files for Revolutionary War and Civil War files, PLUS copies of DAR applications and files of my ancestors. His E-mail address is: DC [email protected] The site is: DC Research National Archives Genealogy and Civil War Research Service Happy searching. Jan
It appears the Fremont Library now requires one to have a library card in order to access the site. This is such a disappointment as it was a great research tool to be able to access the census and I always thought libraries provided free access to the public. Fremont is not one of those. Maybe it would only take applying for a library card to be able to use their database. netLibrary - Create An Account However, I have found another site for a library that appears to be even better as it has several links to other sites as well. The Newberry Library . Please do not hold me responsible if it does not work. I only try to pass along what I find. Good luck. Jan
I hate libraries/archives where you can't search around for yourself. Some of my best information I stumbled on looking for something else! But it does sound like it must be chock full of somethng, so that is good. And in this day and time, you have to protect everything. Carleen

Can anyone lead me to the right direction for finding information on the Internet about a marriage for Jane Dexter BILBO prior to 1931; as she was divorced Feb. 2, 1931. I am looking for the name of the man she married and a date. It looked like she resided in Bealris IN. God Bless Pam

Haven't quite figured out what's up with these free census sites, but I've been unable to access the Fremont Library site today as they asked for a password. Prior to today, no problem. Try this: http://www.burlington.lib.ia.us/ I could get on this site all day today. I suspect a conspiracy with Heritage Quest and a few libraries to subscribe to their census data with the return being that the library allow consumers 'free' access to their sites for awhile. Heritage Quest plants the "FREE" census data to us hungry folks so that we will then subscribe. I don't know how much a subscription costs, but with the way their data comes up and the info they provide, it may be worth it. Remember they are in competition with genealogy.com, ancestry.com, and the other large genealogy websites. So, get in there and get your 1870 data before we're made to pay to what rightfully belongs to us anyhow! Bonnie/IL
Hey listers, I live real close to the Newberry Library and go there often. I don't know how to describe it except close to but not as good as Allen Cty. It's stuffy, well managed, security guards at entrance (no briefcases or coats or children allowed in), bazillions of books and resources, many resouces "behind" the scenes for which you need to fill out a form & have them brought to you, rather high photocopy charges that you cannot perform yourself, etc. Well maintained, preserved, and managed. An awesome place that takes up a whole city block in a turn of the century building that's a treat just to walk into in the Rush St area of Chicago. If you can get there, do it. Well worth the trip. First visit their website and download all that they have for your area of research; of course, you can also consult the card file, but knowing what they have ahead of time is a great asset. Very helpful staff in a stuffy uppercrust atmosphere. Don't miss it! Bonnie/Il
This last one was for my cousin! sorry. Age shows the later it gets! Carleen
this would explain WHY no one can access the site as of today anyway...... Dear Researcher; This comes as a response to your inquiry regarding access to our HeritageQuest database. We recently discovered that the online product was improperly configured by the vendor. This error was allowing access to the product to ANYONE for free, which is in violation of our licensing agreement. That error has now been corrected. I regret to inform you that only those in our service area with a valid library card are allowed access. While we have briefly explored the idea of "charging" those out of our immediate service area, at this time our organization is not yet large or sophisticated enough to be able to administrate such a thing. As a "silver lining", however -- the responses we have received have been wonderful validations of both the product and the communications network among genealogists. We urge you to approach your local public library and encourage them to invest in HeritageQuest. I would also like to express my appreciation to all of your nice compliments and remarks concerning our website. We are grateful for your understanding and comments. Looky, Looky! Don't you have an Edwin in Leven's family? Look at the Levi! This has got to be our sister! Do you think so? Carleen
Thank you Diane! I love seeing that son Levi, because I think she is my gggdfather's sister. Hia name was Levi, his mother was Lucinda, a brother named his only dau, Caroline, and I think a son named Edwin too. Maybe we are on the right track after all. Thank you, I really do not need the other Sherwoods, I am just really interested in her and the kids. Carleen
Carleen, I found your Thomas and Caroline Sherwood in Franklin County, Indiana on the 1860 Census. Thomas, 35, IN Caroline, 35, IN Louise, 14, IN John, 13, IN Lucinda, 10, IN Levi, 9, IN Edwin, 4, IN Living close to them are two other Sherwood families. If you need their info, let me know.
