Hi All, <Valerie Wolf wrote about the polygamist practices of the Cherokee.> There were a lot of different ways the Cherokee thought of marriages. The women were held in high esteem, for they would be the future mothers of warriors and chiefs. Some of the "Old Customs" of marriage were the man gave the woman deer meat that meant he would always see that there was food in the house and the woman gave him corn that meant she would be a good Cherokee Wife. To get a divorce, the woman only had to put the man's things outside. How long the "Old Customs" lasted I don't know. A good book to read on some of the ways of Cherokees way of life is, Grace Woodwood's "The Cherokees" Jerry correct me if I am wrong about the author. I gave my copy to a friend of mine and have not replace it yet. Ginger
