Valerie Wolf wrote about the polygamist practices of the Cherokee. Thanks and that info is valuable to me. We are mixed and fullblood from the maternal and paternal sides but there are few relatives on the rolls. I am wondering about this practice among the Creek Nation, too. It seems that my ggrandfather was married many more times than I was told or discovered on the census records. In our family, divorce and remarriage was extremely common. I have often wondered about that because current society is under the impression that the we have the highest level of divorce. What I must remember is that most of my ancestors were not European. And I think that I have been ignoring this obvious fact because I live in the assimilated culture. Not only were most of our ancestors not christians but traditionalists, they also practiced polygamy. If anyone else has such cultural tidbits, please share them with the group because this info is pertinent to genealogical researc! h. I, unfortunately, only became aware of my heritage four years ago, due to circumstances not within my control; so that is why I am having trouble figuring this all out. Thank you all!
