Hi Everybody, Does anyone know of my grandfather WOODALL O'KUYKENDALL "Woda" BERRY son Samuel A. Berry and Sarah Almedia Allen Berry. According to his birth affidavit of the Dept. of the Interior, Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes, he was born 30 JAN 1897 in Northern District (hard to read) of Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. His mother, a Cherokee citizen was known as Almedia, or "Meda" or "Midia" was the daughter of William Alexander Allen and Emma Inez Boudinot. According to my mother's birth certificate Woda was born in Muskogee, OK. I also find references to the Canadian District and also to Porum, OK. Katie Starr and Carrie Starr attended the birth of Woda Berry on the 30th of January 1897. Katie and Carrie Starr were also at the birth of Woda's brother, HOMER BERRY b. 17 MAR 1899, Muskogee, OK, d. 01 JUN 1944 Knox City, Knox, TX. Woda also had a sister, Emma, b.1896, m. ca 1910 to George Redwine,d. 1926 and buried with infant in Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Dimmitt, Castro, TX. There may have been a sister named Lola b. 1899, d. 1903 and buried in Starr Family Cemetery SW of Briartown, Oklahoma. Looking on my atlas I'm unable to tell if Briartown is in Haskell or Muskogee County. There was another sister,Minnie Berry, who was adopted by Carrie and Pony Starr. Eliza Catherine "Carrie" Horn, born August 12, 1879, in Indian Territory, Oklahoma; died October 14, 1962, in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. I don't know the parents of Carrie. She married (1) Samuel Saguila " Pony " Starr 1899. He was the son of Thomas Starr and Clarissa Autry. *Note: Thomas Starr was the son of Catherine Reese, b. 08 AUG 1820, d. 04 JUL 1884 and Thomas Starr b. 1813, d. 07 OCT 1890. Catherine was the sister of Eleanor "Ellen" Reese great aunt to Thomas and great grandmother to Emma, Woda, Homer, Nina and perhaps Lola. Carrie and Pony adopted Minnie Berry 4000-Minnie Berry, Citizenship Certificate Issued October 26, 1907. My grandfather (who at age 6) said he remembered the day that Carrie Starr rode up on her horse and took his baby sister away. My great grandmother, Sarah Almedia Allen Berry, had died as a result of childbirth. Minnie married J. Lawrence Hodgkins. Mr. Hodgkins according to his business stationery was involved in real estate, stockyards, meat market and grocery, Texas' largest food display, and Walnut Creek Farms with registered Jersey cattle. I knew Minnie as "Aunt Lois" my grandfather's sister. She lived in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and died there in August of 1989. In 1941 she was living in Lake Worth, Ft. Worth, TX. She never had children. She enjoyed oil painting. My parents have one of her landscapes. An affidavit from the State of Oklahoma, County of Muskogee states: Nina Hodgkins of lawful age being first duly sworn upon oath states: that she was born Minnie Berry; that her mother died when she was about six weeks old and her father gave her to E. Cassie Starr and Samuel Starr; that E. Cassie Starr and Samuel Starr changed her name to Nina Berry Starr; that subsequently when she became of age she married J. L. Hodgkins; that she has been known through her life as Minnie Berry Hodgkins and Nina Hodgkins; and that the Nina Hodgkins mentioned in the will and final decree entered in the estate of Cassie E. Starr, deceased, is one and the same person as Minnie Berry Hodgkins. Witnessed 23 MAY 1963 by Lucy Mannis foster sister of Nina. When my grandfather lived with my family, he would sometimes go to Oklahoma to visit his "Indian cousins". An entry in his address book leads me to believe this person might have been Emmett Lowery and his 2nd wife Fern McCaslin Lowery. Emmett had nine children by his first wife Nannie B. Hornett. You might say, she already knows everything about these people. Maybe so, but there's always room for more. I'd especially like to find some of Emmett's children some of whom would still be living and in their 70's. Would love to hear from you. Helen Davis GradashY@aol.com
