The Winnebago Indians were originally a Great Lakes tribe, but were pushed west to a reservation, then the reservation was abolished and they were given land in Nebraska on an allotment basis. They were a separate tribe from the Santee Sioux - who were to the north of them (see map: "A History of the Indians of the United States", page #406) In any event-- the Cherokees were never there.
