I just got some records today from the Arkansas State Archives regarding my Matthew Green, who was born 1825 or 1830 in Ireland. The fact that there were whites (including at least one other Irishman, named John McLane) fighting in Stand Watie's regiments is now well documented and that some companies were mixed blood and white, while other companies were mixed and full bloods only and others were all white. This is confirmed by an article in Confederate Veteran in 1894 by Thos. F. Anderson, the adjunctant assistant (AAG) to Stand Watie's staff, who himself was white. They show that there was a Matthew Green, private, 2d Co. K, 1 Reg't Cherokee Mounted Vols who appeared on a Company Muster Roll of the organization named above, for Oct 1 1862 to June 30 1863, dated June 30, 1863. It also shows that he enlisted July 12 186_ at Fort Davis by Capt James Stuart for a period of two years. He was last paid by J. G. Vore to Sept 30 186_. He was also listed as Absent without Leave from 1" of December to 1" of May. Absent with leave since 10" of June. The footnote at the bottom says: "The 1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers (also known as Watie's Regiment; as the 2d Regiment Cherokee Mounted Rifles, Arkansas, and as the 1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Rifles or Riflemen) was organized July 12, 1861, for twelve months, and reorganized July 12, 1862, for two years. Five companies that were temporarily attached to this regiment after the reorganization are reported to have been assigned, February 3, 1863, to the 2d Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers." This record was signed by "J. W. Wilkinson" as the Copyist. My questions for anyone who is interested in this record: 1. What is the Copyist? 2. Who was Capt. James Stuart (can you tell me anything about him?) 3. Why are the dates 186_ left blank on the final digit? 4. What does 1" and 10" mean? 5. What took place during this time period in this unit?
