What does the term "Black Dutch" mean? My father's family > called > themselves Black Dutch.....is this a clue to their origin? > I'd appreciate hearing from any and all on this subject. > Bobbie Turner Beasley Well, I've come across the term before and looked it up. It can mean two things. One, I read somwhere that during the various times over the centuries that the Jews have been persecuted, a goodly number of Jewish merchants that were doing business in Holland would survive by converting and marrying into Dutch families. Their decendents were on the whole a little darker than the average dutch and that term was used sometimes. Another use was by some families of mixed Native American/White, Black/White or Native American/Black/White ancestory that decided to pass as White and used this term if anybody asked about their ancestory. Sometimes they would use black Irish, too. Robbie Robinson
