Somebody asked how to get the digitized copies of Dawes Rolls on NAIL. I'm using 'em now, so I've got 'em handy. (If you go to the URL listed in Indian-Territory-Roots, the instructions are also listed there, somewhere: which's where I printed them from.) Ok: there are 2 files of the type you are referring to (digitized on-line source, page by page.) These are: 1. Final Rolls of the Citizens & Freedmen of the 5 Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory, 634 pg.s. Lists the names of the individuals who were allowed on the tribal rolls by the Dawes Commission. 2. Index to the Final Rolls of Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory, 635 pg.s. Lists the names of the individuals who were allowed on the tribal rolls by the Dawes Commission. (I'm not sure myself what's the difference between these 2.) 1. To search "Final Rolls": a. select STANDARD or EXPERT search b. In the first keywords box, type "Final Rolls" c. Check the checkbox for ONLY DESCRIPTIONS LINKED TO DIGITAL COPIES d. SUBMIT the search e. The "Number of Hits" indicator will go from 0 to 1. f. hit DISPLAY RESULTS 2. To search "Index to Final Rolls" (nearly same thing): a. select STANDARD or EXPERT search b. In the first keywords box, type "Index to Final Rolls" c. Check the checkbox for ONLY DESCRIPTIONS LINKED TO DIGITAL COPIES d. SUBMIT the search e. The "Number of Hits" indicator will go from 0 to 1. f. hit DISPLAY RESULTS For both of these, when you hit display results (to display the 1 hit result) it brings up a list, where each list item is the link to the graphic for each of the 634 or so digitized pages. If you then click\ on any item in the list, the literal digitized page of the document will be displayed (it's a large graphic, so it may take some time). I play "Solitaire" while waiting for each graphic to load (to the point where it's legible) and then decide whether to save it or search more forwards/backwards. The lists are more or less in alphabetical order, so you can do this. Start to finish in the index, is pretty much alpha-order A => Z, but on each page, sometimes the order gets a bit scrambled. I hope this helps! /Cheryl Conway caconway@worldnet.att.net
