    3. I am reading a book entitled, The Delaware Indians, a History" by C. A. Weslager. He has written 25 books dealing with the American Indian occupatin of the Delaware River Valley. I am trying to interpret on p.9 of this book a statement "There are no Indian reservations in Oklahoma, and these Oklahoma-Delawares no longer exist as a self-contained tribal group as do some 400,000 other American indians living on government reservations in 26 states. In 1907 along with other Indians settled in former Indian Territory, the Delawares became American citizens int he newlyformed state of Oklahoma." My question: Are there no Indian reservations in Oklahoma, period? For some reason I thought there was. I thought when we drove thru Oklahoma state in 1992, I saw a sign saying "Cherokee Reservation." Truly uninformed, And wish to be informed, Dee Randall Shenandoah Valley, VA

    3. Dee - You may have seen a sign; "Cherokee NATION", but none of the Five Civilized Tribes had reservations in Indian Territory - ever. We were (and are yet again) sovereign Indian nations. The "reservations" of some of the OK Territory tribes were abolished by the Dawes Commission prior to statehood in 1907. 3. Didn;t the Delaware Indians "buy into" the Cherokee Tribe as did the Shawnees--at least the Shawnees known as the ":Loyal Shawnees). ----- Original Message ----- From: Jerri Chasteen <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, December 23, 2000 3:31 PM Subject: Re: [IT ROOTS] Indian Reservations in Oklahoma > Dee - > You may have seen a sign; "Cherokee NATION", but none of the Five Civilized > Tribes had reservations in Indian Territory - ever.
