I feel badly when I hear people insulting others on their opinions as to what may be helpful information from another perspective. Case in point would be the exchange below re. building and providing access to DNA databases for PEOPLE access ... I would urge people NOT to let their fears of the misuse of a technology such as DNA "proofs" to rule their behavior so they abuse their own integrity and dignity AND that of those they insult. Knives, for instance, (lower tech admittedly) can both kill and serve humankind's needs. Same with the sun ... even lower tech. Hi tech no difference ... its the USE of KNOWLEDGE which determines whether it will be abusive or "good" for humankind. I would like to "crack open a seed of food for thought" (my husband's words), re use of DNA databases and geneology. As an Indian law attorney and concerned human, I have been involved in tribal enrollments and some "roots" type research. I can see where many "disputes" and disenfranchisement as members of a tribal community could simply be solved by the use of DNA to prove/disprove whether someone is/is not of a given tribal heritage. WHAT a neat, energy-saving, time-saving, emotion-saving, TRUTH-FINDER that it could provide. So it can be used to protect civil-rights as well as what the "nazi" politically-based fears expressed below. Let us instead think of the BETTER WAY of applying knowledge ... for humankind ... instead of using knowledge to INSULT one another ... lets be UP WITH PEOPLE!! (AND other species) ... lets exercise our dignity for our common welfare.
