I am researching the following surnames: Cook, Sewell, Dixon or Dickson, Campbell, Green, Lancaster My family has always known that we were of Indian descent, but it was not discussed. My grandmother even forbid anyone to look into our family lineage. Any information that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. My grandmother Alice Luetta Dickson (also shown sometimes as Dixon) was born in 1894 in Spiro, LeFlore County, Cherokee Nation. Her father was James (Jim) Dickson / Dixon and her mother was Mary F. Campbell. I have no information on their parents. According to the 1910 census, Mary Dickson lived McIntosh County, Oklahoma. She was born in 1857 in Alabama. The children shown to be living with her at that time were: Rosa born in 1887 in Arkansas Bob born in 1889 in Arkansas Neely born in 1893 in Oklahoma and Jimmie born in 1897 in Oklahoma My grandmother Alice was living with her brother. My Cook family moved from Virginia in the 1700's to Tennesse then to North Carolina. In 1790 my Cook and Stewart ancestors are listed in the census in Anson County, NC. Greens, Dicksons, and Campbells also are shown in Anson County, although I have not connected them yet to my family. From North Carolina, the Cooks moved to Georgia. In the 1850 census my Cook ancestors lived in Seminole District, Chattooga County, Georgia; and my Sewell ancestors lived in Summerville, Chattooga County, Georgia. (northwestern part of Georgia) According to the 1880 census my Cook and Green families lived in Chattooga County, GA (northwestern part). From there they moved to the northeastern part of Alabama. In 1891 my great-grandfather Charles Madison Davis Cook homesteaded land near Valley Head, DeKalb County, Alabama. He moved to Checotah, McIntosh County, Oklahoma around 1905. According to the 1910 census, the family was living in Checotah, Oklahoma. Charles D. obtained a land pat! ent #342071 on 18 Jun 1913 for 160 acres in Township 21. My grandfather John Thomas Edward Cook was born in 1894 in Valley Head, DeKalb County, Alabama. He married Alice Dixon between 1911-1913 in McIntosh County, Oklahoma. The migration of the Cook family not only seems to follow the migration of the Cherokee Indians, but also where they lived was where the Cherokee Indians lived. Does anyone have any information on the location or family? According to the Guion Miller Rolls, Charles Cook, et al applied for compensation. His residence was Georgia and the Application # was 19392. Does any one have any information on this Charles Cook? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sharon Rice Staff Assistant City of College Station ph. 979-764-3778 fax 979-764-3785 srice@cstx.gov College Station.
