My grandfather was Sterling A Angel and was born on June 22, 1889 in Kosoma, Oklahoma. He was married in Antlers, OK on Dec 22, 1913. He married Bertha M Bryant. He was living in Kiamichi, OK in 1917. His mother was Isadore Gardner who was born in Kansas and his father was Lige (or Liege) Angel and was born in Missouri. I have been unable to locate any information on either Isadore or Lige. Also, I can not locate Sterling Angel before his marriage in 1913. I have found him on the 1920 and the 1930 census. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Kim --------------------------------- Yahoo! Music Unlimited - Access over 1 million songs. Try it free.

I ran a Google search on this, and it appears that you (or someone else with the same name) was requesting the same information in 2004 from Oklahoma Mysteries list. A gentleman from that list offered this information: << Consequently the following information pertaining to the event was found after conducting an internet searach: The following newspaper article, in part, was published in the Caney Leader,Thursday, November 12, 1914, titled Durant Girl Murdered. You will note it suggests "This article was summarized by the submitter". The article describes the circumstances of the murder. _http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ok/county/atoka/CaneyLeader.html_ (http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ok/county/atoka/CaneyLeader.html) Newspaper article. You could also contact the Oklahoma Historical Society as they may have the complete article from the Caney Leader or other information microfilmed in their records.>> I also found an article for you at that time (that I am unable to re-locate) regarding a Governor's investigation of the lawmen involved in attempting to find the individual, who committed this crime. However, my notes to you regarding this indicated that the investigation was being done in Woodward, OK, which is in NW Oklahoma, while Durant is in the southern part of Oklahoma, just over the Texas border. I would suggest you look for a volunteer in Durant, OK to see if they will check this out for you. Durant is in Bryan, OK. You might also try to locate an article on this in a Woodward (Woodward county) newspaper from that time period. I think this may be one of those cases where you are going to have to make some more direct contacts rather than attempting to find the information on the Internet. It's sad for me to say that I don't think Durant in 1914 was any different from any modern day city when it comes to men coming in thru windows and killing young teen girls if they cry out for help. Oops, Melody's account wouldn't have been in here anyway, as the book goes only through 1885 and she's researching 1914. But it is a really good resource that I would recommend at least to genealogical collections of libraries. I've enjoyed it for personal use as well, although my families were not listed anywhere. The book was published in 1982, compiled by the El Paso Genealogical Society. The items include many reports from locations all over the West. Although I wouldn't want to interfere with the author's sales, I wouldn't mind doing a few lookups, either. Hi Melody, Sounds like a fascinating family story there. Wish I could help. I checked the only book I have that might have info, but it didn't: "Births, Deaths, & Marriages from El Paso Newspapers Through 1885." These papers published news from other parts whenever possible, so I checked for your Pauline. Wasn't listed, though. Do you know her circumstances? I'm really intrigued and wonder at her tragedy. I am searching for the burial place of Mary Headley Chalmers. She may have been buried in an unmarked grave, due to the fact that she was a white woman married to a black man when they were shot to death by a mob as reported by the Muskogee Phoenix on March 22, 1898. I would also like to know if someone could do a look up for me; I would like to know if the paper did a follow up story (it was a weekly paper), on those events, such as; where the people who were killed that night would have been buried, and what further action was taken by those who were accused of participating in the killings, and what happened to Mary's 3 year old son, Albert, who later told his children he had been there during the shooting. Thank you to any and all who may be able to shed a little light on this family mystery. Patty Headley

Ida was born to John ROLLINS and Linda ?. Both may have been born in Mississippi or Alabama around 1850. John is said to have been killed in a mining accident in Indian Territory sometime before 1892. Linda may have re-married. That is all I have on them. James Robert ROBERTSON was born in 1865. According to on census he was born in North Carolina and on another one in Illinois. He died in 1917 and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Checotah, OK. Ida was born 1873 (from head stone) in Arkansas and died in 1915, She is also buried in Greenlawn. Ida and James R. were married Aug. 14, 1892, Iron Bridge, Indian Territory. I am researching the following surnames: Cook, Sewell, Dixon or Dickson, Campbell, Green, Lancaster My family has always known that we were of Indian descent, but it was not discussed. My grandmother even forbid anyone to look into our family lineage. Any information that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. My grandmother Alice Luetta Dickson (also shown sometimes as Dixon) was born in 1894 in Spiro, LeFlore County, Cherokee Nation. Her father was James (Jim) Dickson / Dixon and her mother was Mary F. Campbell. I have no information on their parents. According to the 1910 census, Mary Dickson lived McIntosh County, Oklahoma. She was born in 1857 in Alabama. The children shown to be living with her at that time were: Rosa born in 1887 in Arkansas Bob born in 1889 in Arkansas Neely born in 1893 in Oklahoma and Jimmie born in 1897 in Oklahoma My grandmother Alice was living with her brother. My Cook family moved from Virginia in the 1700's to Tennesse then to North Carolina. In 1790 my Cook and Stewart ancestors are listed in the census in Anson County, NC. Greens, Dicksons, and Campbells also are shown in Anson County, although I have not connected them yet to my family. From North Carolina, the Cooks moved to Georgia. In the 1850 census my Cook ancestors lived in Seminole District, Chattooga County, Georgia; and my Sewell ancestors lived in Summerville, Chattooga County, Georgia. (northwestern part of Georgia) According to the 1880 census my Cook and Green families lived in Chattooga County, GA (northwestern part). From there they moved to the northeastern part of Alabama. In 1891 my great-grandfather Charles Madison Davis Cook homesteaded land near Valley Head, DeKalb County, Alabama. He moved to Checotah, McIntosh County, Oklahoma around 1905. According to the 1910 census, the family was living in Checotah, Oklahoma. Charles D. obtained a land pat! ent #342071 on 18 Jun 1913 for 160 acres in Township 21. My grandfather John Thomas Edward Cook was born in 1894 in Valley Head, DeKalb County, Alabama. He married Alice Dixon between 1911-1913 in McIntosh County, Oklahoma. The migration of the Cook family not only seems to follow the migration of the Cherokee Indians, but also where they lived was where the Cherokee Indians lived. Does anyone have any information on the location or family? According to the Guion Miller Rolls, Charles Cook, et al applied for compensation. His residence was Georgia and the Application # was 19392. Osiyo, I am researching my grandfather S.J Morgan, his father and mother; James and Manda Morgan. I have been told since I was a small child I have relatives in Cherokee NC as well as possibly Okla...Would love to see if there is anyone researching Morgan's.. Thank you.. Gloria Brinson I've been searching many years...one lady sent me some info and told me that back during the time my grandfather and his parents were living, if one was Indian, then they would almost always put white (race) in for the census..as well as some would put in black or mulatto..as white people thought being a Indian was bad, and for a Indian to marry a white woman, they frowned upon that too..so Now, I'm at a lost..any help is appreciated..I do have some other info as some dates but not alot..
