    2. filmo2@juno.com said- "Since you are so well versed in indian lore, maybe you can tell me what no one else could. Why is it that Chickasha ends in (A ) and doesn't follow the other endings like Konawa and Tonkawa and Tulsa" (AH) -------------------------------------------- I'm very surprised that you would ask me ANY question, considering that you voiced your opinion as to my "ignorance" in your last message to the mail list, but the answer to this question is so obvious that I couldn't resist! Could it "possibly" be because "Chickasha", being located in the CHICKASAW Nation (correctly spelled "CHICKASHA"), was spoken in a different LANGUAGE than the names of the other places that you mentioned? 'Konawa" was located in the Seminole Nation and was a Seminole/Muskogean word meaning "string of beads". "Tulsa" was located in the Creek Nation and was named for "Tulsey Town", an old Muskogean/Creek town back in their lands that became Alabama. "Konawa" was named for the Konawa Tribe- and you'll have to ask THEM the meaning because I do not speak their language! jc

    2. Just a mite hard to argue with ignorance but it does help to know that the Cherokee were free to go where they wanted before the trail of tears and everyone knows the indians had a chief and don't get all hot and bothered about princess even tho I prefer maiden Just like the idiots that like to point out that the US of A is a republic and not a democracy and don't have the sense to know a republic is democratic . I did wander the Cherokee nation some and had some friends in Tulsa and Tonkawa and Konawa and other places so don't tell me about their actions toward ignorance. 3. Is there anyone on here connected to the family of : George W. Walker son of Thigh Carter Walker ? They lived in just outside Welch, Oklahoma in the late 1800's and early 1900's. My family and I visited the old Walker home, just down from the Walker Cemetery a few years ago and we made contact with a granddaughter of G.W. Walker. I have lost my information on how to contact her and would very much like to reach her again. She had so much history on the family and I have some questions I would like to ask. Mary Jane Davis was one of George W. Walkers wives . Their picture is in the Craig County book. I know this line of Walkers was connected to Jonathan Meigs, John Ross, the Vanns etc., but I just don't remember all of them. If anyone knows of this line of Walkers please contact me. Thanks, Rebecca

    2. I forgot to reply to your interest in my name--- My Cherokee blood comes through the Brown, Vann, Rogers, Hicks, Horn, Dougherty, Youngdeer, and Matoy families. Mr. Chasteen- my deceased husband, was not Indian of any tribe-- he was "white". Jerri C. Claremore OK

    1. Re: [IT ROOTS] Mary M. Kizer/Kyzer
    2. Interesting what you see on the "IT Roots" Jerri, I am supposed to be part indian because of some Chestine ancestor. You may have corresponded with Barbara Peterson about this, but wondered if you know of any Chestine/Chasteen/Chastain or whatever spellling that met up with an indian princess some place. A gggreat uncle was Chestine Cline, his nephew was also Chestine and a local cousins father was Chestine. All from the Cline family but the connection was supposedly thru my Ruth ancestor. Maybe I am my own indian cousin. The early census didn't discriminate unless they were full blood. At least the ones I have checked. Try William Walter Bibee in Cocke county TN, his grandfather was married to a Cherokee "princess" in VA. Those folks (Indians) did wander around some. 1st On Sat, 22 Jul 2006 20:07:13 -0500 <chasteen2@cox.net> writes: > Betty said: "Looking for the mother of MARY M. KIZER. Mary was 1/2 > indian. 3. never fear, turns out a lot of Indians were putting white on the census, despite their Indian heritage, due to persecution perhaps...look on Indian census or some of the Rolls to verify the heritage. Carla

Mary M. and her children are all shown as "white". Also check family 749 on the 1850 Lincoln Co TN census for the Gabriel KYZER family: Gabriel (age 46); Jasper (age 12); Herod (age 9); Alcey (age 7); Mary (age 6); and Nancy E, (age 5). I don't know where you got your information about your ancestor, Mary M. being "a half-blood Indian", but she is not shown on any Cherokee rolls or applications, and since she was 6 years old, all of the census shows both she, her siblings, parent and grandparents as "white". Her place of birth (Lincoln Co TN) is not within any area that was inhabited by an Indian tribe. Best of luck in tracing your ancestry. Jerri Chasteen Claremore

She was the great grand mother of my friend, and she died in Bakersfield California. All living family declare her to be a full blood Cherokee woman. Family oral history : She owned a house of prostitution--late 1800's--somewhere outside of Tulsa Oklahoma--there were stories about her in the local newspapers. 3. I'm searching for a needle in a haystack! I'm not even sure if I am writing to the appropriate list. I'm trying to find my great aunt who was orphaned and reportedly went with her adoptive/foster family from Limestone Co, AL, to Oklahoma Territory between 1892 and probably 1900. Her birth name was Anis Verona GRISHAM b 1886 Limestone Co, AL. Since she was 5 years old when she was orphaned, I'm assuming she would have kept her given name, but have no clue about her surname. If she was adopted, then she would have been given her adoptive family's name. I found a female in the 1910 Canadian Co, OK, census who fits her profile so I am trying to find out additional info on the Anna in the following family: El Reno Township, Dist 90 CANTRELL, Aaron T Head m w 33 M10 MS MS* MS* Anna V wife f w 27 M10 AL MS* MS* Herman son m w 6/12 S OK MS AL *Based on later census years in Garvin Co, I believe these should be AL. In addition, later census years show her mother living in the household as Mary TODD b abt 1857 AL. Can someone please use any resources you may have to do a lookup for any of the above names? Any suggestions where I need to search? Thanks so much! Sandra

    3. with out knowing which roll his number came from I checked the miller roll and 4821 had george p. samuels. page 260. sam jordan on miller roll had number 33443 on page 161 in i.t.[okla]. do you have is parents names? if he was born in 1912 his parents would have been the ones to qualify on the other rolls.and he would be listed with the family. the baker in 1924 has 12 jordans, none 12 yrs old and no sam or david. I did find a samuel jordan with the application number 4821 for the old settlers roll.[1896] [cherokee] [okla] other jordans with the same application number: noah sr and noah jr,thomas franklin, william. you can get the applications [copies] thru the national archives in fort worth microfilmM1650. hope this helps I didn't seee if the applications were denied or granted. good luck patti Indian-Territory-Roots-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: Indian-Territory-Roots-D Digest Volume 05 : Issue 77 Today's Topics: #1 looking for ancestors ["cora miller" ] Administrivia: ==== Indian-Territory-Roots Mailing List ==== To unsubscribe, send an e-mail to: Indian-Territory-Roots-D-request@rootsweb.com Include only one word in the body of the message: unsubscribe ______________________________Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2005 19:41:07 -0600 From: "cora miller" <coram@cableone.net> To: Indian-Territory-Roots-L@rootsweb.com Subject: looking for ancestors I am looking for my ancestors who may have been cherokee blood.
