The Winnebago Indians were originally a Great Lakes tribe, but were pushed west to a reservation, then the reservation was abolished and they were given land in Nebraska on an allotment basis. They were a separate tribe from the Santee Sioux - who were to the north of them (see map: "A History of the Indians of the United States", page #406) In any event-- the Cherokees were never there. See maps, accessible from http://www.cherokee.net . jc

    3. For Charlie and MWhitten: I found another helpful site re Soundex and Oklahoma genealogy. It's at http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/census.htm If you scroll down to the section with heading CENSUS INFORMATION, you'll see a site on the 1790-1920 US Federal Census indexes--Chart of Availability by State which mentions the soundex too. There are other references on this page as well. Good Luck and Happy Holidays! 1. HOXBAR--CEMETERY
    2. There is one cemetery near Hoxbar. It is in Love County, which my Delorme's map indicates Hoxbar is also. The cemetery is named Legate. The location is south of Hoxbar on Scott Road about 0.7 miles to Legate Road. Turn left (East) on Legate Road and go about 0,9 miles. Turn left (North) and go about 0.1 miles to a fork in the road, take the right hand road, the cemetery is about 0.2 miles on the right hand side of the road

She gave birth to 6 children: Burt, Thad "Pat", Julian Guy "Babe", Ora, Jack and Lee. She died about six months after giving birth to Lee in 1897 in the Abner community in what is now Love Co OK. I have her marriage record and her on an undated Chickasaw names list in Ardmore, Ok and on the 1890 Chickasaw Nation census. According to family sources, her father was Ben Simms and her mother was named Sophie. According to oral history, Leona was first cousin to Will Rogers' mother. I would appreciate any help. 3. Charlie, I am just beginning to learn about genealogy searches. So, I am not an expert. However, I thought you might find the National Archives site interesting. It has info about the soundex machine. The address is: www.nara.gov You can search the Dawes Rolls, the Guion Miller Rolls and others. I found the indexes easiest to find surnames. Melinda Charlie wrote: Was soundex census information first begun in 1890? Was it carried through up to and including 1920? Is it true that only families with children under 10 years of age were included on the Soundex cards? Are there Soundex microfilms for all states? Thanks!! Charlie

    1. Re: Place Location
    2. Can't help on Jolly Knob. The other two may be in a different part of Carter Co. There are a Mount Pleasant Cemetery and Church about 2 mile south and 1.5 miles east of what is now known as Gene Autry, Ok., on Mount Pleasant Road. This is south on Gene Autry Road, then east about 1.5 miles on Mount Pleasant Road. Depending upon when you are relating to, the school may have been near the church, which is about 0.5 miles west of the cemetery. This is all from maps, so, I do not have more information.
