It would be very interesting if someone would explain the marriage and divorce customs of the Indians of the various tribes. I am mainly interested in the tribes in Arkansas and Oklahoma for the years of about 1880 through 1920. Our grandmother, Lilly Gibbs, was said to have told her children that she was of Indian heritage and that she had married first, a white man, a Mr. Brown and that her people were very displeased because she had not chosen to marry the man of their choosing. She was said to have been disowned from her people which were said to have been Cherokee, but could have been another tribe. We have found Lilly Gibbs b. 1902 on the Clark County, Arkansas Federal Census and it lists her with her mother, Roxie, and her step father, Fred Milhey/Milkey/Mulkey. Birth place listed for both Roxie and Lilly was "Arkansas" and for Fred, "Germany. Sometime between 1910 and 1920 Lilly was married to Mr. Brown, he ends up missing in history and she has given birth to a daughter Bertha, 1917 at the foot of the Kiamichi Mtns. in Eastern Oklahoma and is with child #2 from Mr. Brown when she marries a W.M. Hargis (perviously married and has 3 children of his own) in Idabel Oklahoma in Dec. 1918. Child # 2 is born in December 1918 in Oklahoma. Lilly, who is now a Hargis, is not found on the 1920 Federal Census unless we missed her somehwhere with her family. In 1922, Lilly gives birth to a third daugher, Ruth Hargis in Duncan, Stevens County, Oklahoma. 1928 sees Lilly as filing for divorce from Mr. Hargis in Altus, Jackson County, Oklahoma and then she marries a J.W. Kirby (a blind man) in Sept. 1929 and dies of blood poisoning in October 1929. She is buried in Altus, Oklahoma. Can someone please give me information on the customs/consequences of Indians marrying white men ? Does anyone relate to this family? Do the women of the various Indian tribes go by their maiden names or married names on the census rolls? Is it true that the women always carry their mothers last names when enumerated? Needing lots of help. Joanne
Just last night I was reading an article about that. It pertained to the Choctaws and varied in different "clans" of the choctaw people. But some did marry more than once, usually to a sister or other family member of the wife. It was at the request of the wife, usually because the sister had lost her husband or circumstances such that. This practice was stopped around mid 1800s I think, if I remember correctly. It didn't mention a limit on the number of wives. All the wives shared the same duties and privileges as the first original wife except one. Only the first wife was allowed to share the eating bowl of the husband. Divorce was varied also, but the process was simple. If you want to read this info, I'll find the URL for you. Just let me know. Shelley
I have a question...was it still fairly common for our Indian ancestors to have more than one wife in the early to mid 1800's? If so, was there a "limit" to the number of wives? Jeanne, researching the COBB surname in Indian Territory.

Hello to all, Does anyone here know of a Ben Strickler born probably after 1850. He may have moved from Arkansas to Oklahoma. He was my g grandfather. My g grandmother was Maggie/Margaret/Sissy Downing. He was said to have just disappeared. I found in the Ft. Smith records at NAIL? that a man named Ben Strickler appeared before a judge there. If I obtain these records what would they indicate, besides his offense and his fine. I have his interview with Dawes but it gives little information about him He was denied. Where do I start when researching a man who "just" disappeared? Thank you in advance for any information you can give me. Edwina

I have been transcribing Biographies from the History of Indian Territory, 1901. With the direction and support of Marti at Rootsweb, this site is on its way! This book is packed with good genealogical data for both Indian and Non-Indian Individuals. My dedication is to post the Bio's with any hint of Native American ancestry first. So keep checking this site for possible ancestors! Along with typing up the Bio's, I'm including the Territory Towns. These sections tell you a bit about that town and their first settlers or about a few of those who lived there around mid-1800's to 1901. I have also listed the surnames included in that Town description, for my fellow Genealogists. Listed below are the Bio's and Town Summaries currently posted. This is just a small sampling of what is in this book, I'll be adding Bio's/Towns to this site several times each week [there are over 900 of them]. The MAIN "SUBJECT" is highlighted; additional surnames found within that Bio are listed afterwards. You can READ current and future transcribed BIO's at this site: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Special/Gideon1901Bios You can also do a SURNAME SEARCH within this project. Search engines are accessible from this main website. Many sincere Thank You's to Marti and all at RootsWeb for setting up this site! Enjoy! My search is for the origins of Rebecca E. McKinney b. June 1846 in Texas. She is known to be "part" Native American by family members who knew her. She married Thomas J. Donaldson and died in Milam Co Tx in 1915. Her father Uriah Newton McKinney married Elizabeth Norton in 1843 in Fannin Co Tx, he later had two more marriages. My question ---Who was the "Indian"? Uriah was born Tenn, have never made connection with any family, although many McKinneys settled in Milam Co Tx.from Tenn/Ala. Uriah served in the Mexican War and Civil War, is described as large man dark hair etc. No connection for Nortons. Was Elizabeth or Uriah from Indian Territory and married across Tx/Ok stateline, just across the river? Family stories tell of Rebecca's mother going back to her tribe,he got the children; Rebecca's mother was ill and he took the children and various versions of these.Rebecca told her grandsons that she did not live in a house as a young child. One elderly lady(grandchild of Rebecca) said that her grandfather met her grandmother at a springs; he hauled freight and would pass this place where he met Rebecca and her sister Minerva McKinney. I know that there were two reservations on Brazos River in or near Milam Co.although have yet to see any records. Uriah McKinney and Elizabeth Norton had Minerva (J.M.) 1844 and Rebecca E 1846 and possible Amanda 1850. Uriah and Melissa Unknown had Leynoa/Texoma 1853,Augustus 1856,Chesley 1858,Sarah 1860.He later married Elizabeth Lester ,widow, later in life. Children or Rebecca and Tom Donaldson were T.E. 1852(female,d. young?),W.U.male 1855(d.young?),Claude 1858,John Flemning 1882 Cleburn Chesley 1884. I know this is a long shot but included names etc in the event that it may matter to someone. I know no tribe name,no definite place of origin,no other family names.prior to this period of time. Wishing me luck, Marion Donaldson

I have learned quite a lot from the interesting posts and feel some of you may be able to enlighten me in my search. For many years I have been searching for the background and history of my Grandmother's family. All knowledgables that were living never knew, or knew and weren't telling....now they are all gone. Yet, I have oral story clues and some data I've ferreted over the years. I was raised in Oklahoma, and my family roots are deep there, but it will be sometime before I can visit the places they lived and check out records, in the meantime I have been researching online for about 4yrs.
