Dwight Mission was established in 1823 in the old Cherokee Nation West (Arkansas). When the Cherokee Nation of Indian Territory was established and the citizens were removed to Indian Territory, Dwight Mission was moved and both the mission and school were relocated near Vian. The Oklahoma Historical Society at http://www.ok-history.mus.ok.us/ does have some of the student information on m/film. jc
According to my Great Grandfather's Obit he got the land that the town of Roosevelt, Kiowa Co, Ok. is now on. His name was W. J. Allen. Does anyone know how I would go about finding more info on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail address is LJSchupp@aol.com Jan Schupp

Hello, Does anyone have information about Soldier Springs, which is in Kiowa Co., & not far from Hobart. My grandfather, Charley Edwin Riley was born there in 1895. His father, William Owen, or an uncle, was suppose to have donated land for the first school house in that area I think. Thanks Linda Kincaid Adams Tacoma, Washington LAdams@aol.com Indian Territory family Search: Hobart, & Soldier Springs, Kiowa Co: Perry/Riley/Ethridge/Bunch
I'm curious to know what attracted one set of great-grandparents (John/Averilla HUBBARD) from Wayne Co. KY to Hickory OK approx. 1900 - 1906. Another set of great-grandparents (Matthew/Catherine LONG) traveled from Hempstead Co. Arkansas to Hickory approx. 1902-1908. Both great-grandmothers are buried in the Hickory Cemetery. Was it the railroad? I'd appreciate any insights. Thanks so much. Linda in Iowa W0CJD2@aol.com (it's W "zero")
Hello List! Does anyone know what schools would have been open in the Vian area in the 1890's? And, if by chance there would be any student records, especially parent info? Thanks for any help. Becky (as always, still looking for parents of Grace Fox b.23 June1887, Vian, IT)
Hello to all, I had to share something I came across last night before I fell asleep. It made me smile. "In the early days of the Indian Territory, where I was born, there were no such things as birth certificates. You being there was certificate enough. We generally took it for granted if you were there you must have been born. That was about the only the thing we didn't dispute. Having a certificate of being born was like wearing a raincoat in the water over a bathing suit." -Will Rogers, "Will Rogers, Ambassador of Good Will, Prince of Wit and Wisdom" by P.J. Recently I posted some information that I had learned on Prodigy's Missing Link Genealogy newsletter. The heading was under "Researching in Oklahoma" and gave information about the completion of Vol III on the above subject. Since there had been quite a number of posts here on the subject, I passed that information on. Since that time, I have had quite a few e-mails asking me for information about Vol III and the other Vols. plus I have been asked to do look-ups. I do not have any of the Vols. yet. However, I have found a site titled "Whites in Indian Territory". This site lists a number of books and their contents. By clicking on the button" Back to the Main Page", you will find a fantastic amount of other sources for genealogy in general with many links to Native American genealogy and other specialized areas. I clicked on Cherokee and could not believe the amount of sources that were listed. This information will not provide you answers, you will have to decide which ones may be helpful in your research. I have made a list and will see if I can obtain any through an inter-library loan. But, since I live in VA may not be able to obtain many and will then have to decide which ones I can purchase. The URL for Whites in Indian Territory is < http://members. aol.com/TMCorner/wht_gen.htm >

Is there a book or somewhere I could search, that would have details of different routes available to travelers around 1860 and after the start of the war between the states. For example, would a family from southwest Missouri be able to travel through IT to get to north central Texas? (And back again?) Thanks for any help on this query. Diane
Ok, for those of you who really want to get to Ruthie's page, here's how I did it: first, go to Anna's Genealogy Links then go to Native American Genealogy Sites and scroll dow to Ruthie's Genealogical Page. This seems to be the only way to access it! Jeanne

I found a good site for info on Choctaws in IT...it even has a list of Choctaw Indian schools, teachers, and students (Indian and white)! I had a little difficulty navigating the site, but it's worth the effort. It's "Ruthie's Genealogical Page" http://www.geocities.com/Heartlan/Prairie/27651 Jeanne
I am trying to locate information on the marriage and family of Mack Sparkman and Ruth Emaline Erving (Emaline F?). From the 1880 Census Soundex - Sparkman's in Missouri I find that he was born in KY in 1857. She was born in ARK in 1858 and their first son, my grandfather, Finus (Finis) was born in MO in 1877. Vol. 2, ED Sheet 25, Line 27 Sugar Creek Barry Co. They were living either at Tecumseh or Shawnee, OK at the time of death. As you can see there have been multiple spellings. Mack Sparkman had a brother named John, I have been told that Emaline Erving was Cherokee Indian but have not able to confirm it. I do appreciate this medium to communicate with others. Thanks. JB
Hi to all lists (and I apologize now if some of you are on the same lists I am and get this twice or more times!).... Anyway, my girlfriend Susan was over last night. She used to work at the National Archives and we were talking about the fire and the 1890 census. She said that the 'fire' actually burned WWII records. The 1890 census was water damaged. The Archives appealed to Congress to appropriate money to have them saved and restored but they never did. They just threw them away!!! How sad and disappointing. None of these guys in Congress must have been doing genealogy at the time! 8-( Barbara DAVIDSON Norkus
