    1. Re: Question!
    2. I do believe you. Despite several searches in some Tennessee counties for the years prior to the Civil War and thereafter, I have not been able to locate a single Matthew Green, born 1833 who would have been a Tennessee farmer serving as a Private under Stand Watie. His Confederate compiled record shows his physical description as light hair, six feet tall, blue eyes, and fair skin. My Matthew Green was of dark hair, five foot six inches tall with grey eyes, and was three years older according to both of his US Army enlistments, signed his name with two T's, not one T, although others often wrote his name with one T. I wonder if I can find any land records that show Matthew Green in Tennessee owning farmland. Would Cherokees have owned land in Tennessee, I wonder. Also, family legend said that Matthew Green was killed early in the Civil War yet I have never found any documentation of his death. There was a 2d Lieutenant named Matthew Green in Stand Watie's regiment as of July 12, 1861 according to records at the National Archives, and this 2d Lieutenant was the one listed as six feet tall with light hair. Is it possible that the physical description and age was a mistake in transcribing the military records? 3. Subject: Sacagawea Coin I am sure that Lewis and Clark were quite aware of the value of their friend, Sacagawea, on the trip to the west coast. Remembering that it was Sacagawea, girl of 16, with an infant on her back, who interpreted and aided the possibly otherwise ill-fated expedition of Lewis & Clark to the Pacific Coast, I recommend visiting the US Mint Page and voting for your favorite view of the new coin. The address to view the choices for the new $1 coin are with the US Mint Page at: http://www.usmint.gov/dollarcoin/finalist_home.cfm I personally like the view #99, and also recommend reading the site: (This page gives valuable background to the little known life of Sacawea, from the pages of Lewis' Journal.) http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Hall/9626/NativeAmericans.html Karla Shahan ktshahan@juno.com >============== >I get by with a little help from my friends. > .... 3. There was the 1880 List of Authenticated Cherokee Freedmen as well as the Wallace Rolls that both preceeded the Dawes Rolls. However, note that only the 1880 Authenticated Freedman List was used to verify citizenship during the Dawes hearings. The 1880 Census and the Wallace Rolls are also available at the Federal Records Center in Ft. Worth, and are on Microfilm. -Angela Y. 2. It also depends on who you talk to.....My grandfather, Shelby, was married twice, 1st to Cecil and they had 2 children then he married Jimmie (my grandmother) and they had 4 children. According to my dad and his sisters, Shelby divorced Cecil and later met my grandmother. According to my half- cousin, Shelby was dating my grandmother before he was divorced Cecil, then left her while she was sick in bed and left her with 2 small children to support. Guess we'll never know for sure.
