"I have a photograph that is approximately 70 years old. It's a picture of a young Indian man (late teens or early twenties). He was attending the College of the Ozarks at Clarksville, Arkansas or their Prep school which was on the same campus. His name was Simpson Deer, either from Arkansas or Oklahoma. I will be happy to mail it to a relative that would like to have it. No charge. Sandy in Arkansas My e-mail address is WCTGRANNY@aol.com"
Morning, Has anyone ever heard of a Native American named Buie? his dau, Sarah c1770/80 GA wed Braswell Overstreet c1770 bNC. Possibly wed GA? NC? I really don't know much about my Buie family but, I know my Braswell lived in GA. and quite possibly the Overstreets were Indian traders. Martha
This is not in my line, but I have been searching "Old Rowan Co" (includes Rowan, Davidson, Davies, Guilford, Randolph, and many other counties) in western NC recently for Hoover/Carrick/Skeen/Cross, and have very often seen the name Booe in marriage lists, etc, etc. Seems like a probable link to me. I'm sure it caught my eye partly because it is unusual. But there apparently were a goodly number of Booes in the area. It didn't strike me until writing this but, back far enough for the all the spelling shifts, this might be related to the Bowie line also? Good luck, Linda Schreiber -----Original Message----- From: Martha Veselka <martyc@easy.com> To: Indian-Territory-Roots-L@rootsweb.com <Indian-Territory-Roots-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, February 18, 1999 1:23 PM Subject: Buie/ NA? >Morning, Has anyone ever heard of a Native American named Buie? his dau, >Sarah c1770/80 GA wed Braswell Overstreet c1770 bNC. All of my ancestors lived in Pickens Co, I believe that Pickens encompassed some if not all of the Chickasaw Nation boundary along the Red River now the counties of Love, Carter Jefferson, Stephens, Grady, and Garvin. Would be most appreciative if anyone knows where I could search for records of people who lived in Pickens CO. I have been able to search the 1900 US census and found Pickens Co in the Chickasaw Nation. Where there any news paper printed locally in the 1860, 70, 80, and 90s Suzanne Shaffner Researching Cornish, Foreman, Ross, Overstreet, Thompson, Ussery
Suzanne: The McClain County (OK) Historical and Genealogical Society published the 1890 census for Pickens County. I'm pretty sure it is still available. Visit the Twin Territories Web Site >> http://www.rootsweb.com/~itgenweb/index.htm << and go to the Chickasaw Nation. Kerry Armstrong has lots of source material there and on his own pages. Newspapers online include some pertaining to the Chickasaw Nation 1887-1890 >> http://www.rootsweb.com/~okbits/ftsmith.html << Sharron Ashton In a message dated 2/18/1999 8:53:46 AM, sshaffn@fas.harvard.edu writes: [for] >records of people who lived in Pickens CO...

We'd love to put it online. Several have asked how to get copies of the interviews. I had hoped to hear from the OHS Archives, but my last few emails to them seems to have been lost in cyberspace. CHOWNINGS OF TN>IL>TX>OK> Particularly: Richard CHOWNING, b abt<1800 in TN, d <1850, Denton Co., TX Richard migrated to Jersey Co., IL in around 1835, with his sons Samuel and James William CHOWNING. They all had land patents in Jersey Co. In about 1849 they left and migrated to Denton Co., TX with some of the in-laws of James', the David MYERS clan. In route to TX, he must have lost his wife and some children. Four children made the trip and show up in census reports of Denton Co. The following are his children: Robert CHOWNING, b 1805 d 1851, Denton Co., TX Samuel CHOWNING, b abt 1810-1814 d unknown Damarus Ester or Easter CHOWNING, b 1812 in IL or TN, d 1880 James William CHOWNING, b 16 Feb. 1818 d 29 May 1900 in Cundiff, TX Of particular interest is: Melissa Elizabeth CHOWNING, daughter of Uriah J. CHOWNING, son of Samuel CHOWNING, Melissa was born, 06 Sept 1866, married a James Wesley Burke, then married a David Edgar MORTON, b 20 Feb 1862 in IL, d 17 July 1928 in Waurika, OK, Melissa died at the home of her son in Cushing, OK on 24 Sept 1934. All my life, my grandfather MORTON said we had indian blood in us through the CHOWNING lineage, and that the Chownings were traveling on the trail of tears to IL, via an underground railroad. Does anyone know of such a thing in that time era? As of this date we cannot link the CHOWNINGs to any tribe, anyone have any suggestions? I am new to genealogy and using computers so have patience with me. Thanks to everyone in advance, Jan

Sue, there is a blurb in the publication "Craig County and Its People" about the Barkers. They were buried in Timber Hill Cemetery outside Welch OK. My family tradition says that the family was unable to find someone who would agree to permit burial, and that my third cousin Q.P. McGhee, son of Thomas Jefferson McGhee, permitted their burial in the McGhee plot there. Their graves are unmarked.
