I plan on heading to the library on this one, but does anyone know whether or not Fort Smith, ARK was once a part of OK/IT? My grandfather, John Monroe PHILLIPS, stated all his life that he was born in Oklahoma/Indian Territory in January 1890. This is even on his death certificate. His mother, Mattie (TAYLOR) PHILLIPS KELLEY, in 1951, filed a birth certificate for him, giving his place of birth as Reform, Saline Co., AR. (Talk about scandal) I later found out from family that they were in Fort Smith, AR, as were the second branch of my family, CATES. Does anyone know about this history regarding OK/IT? If this is a duplicate question, please forgive : ) Thanks for your help. Charlie Ward
Hello Everyone, Does anyone have any information about Mary Coodey, daughter of Daniel Ross Coodey and Amanda? She was their third child, born in 1856. Daniel was the brother of William Shorey Coodey, and son of Joseph and Jane Ross Coodey. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jeri Macarow@ix.netcom.com
Can anyone tell me how the Choctaw punished within the tribe? Old family story relates that an ancestor, half breed, committed a crime, and to keep him from being punished by the Indians, his mother said he was white. Anybody know anything that might help clear this up some for me? Surely the indians were as fair as the whites when choosing punishments for the crimes.....Thanks if anyone can help.... The exact meaning of the word KENTUCKY is not known. The term may have been a Wyandot word meaning "land of tomorrow" or an Iroquoian word that could be translated as "place of meadows." It does not mean "dark and bloody ground." That legend probably came from remarks made by Cherokee chiefs Dragging Canoe and Oconostota at Sycamore Shoals when Richard Henderson bought what rights the Cherokee had to a large part of Kentucky. "There is a dark cloud over that country,"Dragging Canoe reportedly warned, and Oconostota said to Daniel Boone as they parted, "Brother, we have given you a fine land, but I believe you will have much trouble settling it." Could any of you share any info you have on the Robersons of LeFlore Co., late 1800s? I am trying to find the parents of Eliza Jane Roberson, my great- grandmother. In the 1910 census, she's listed as 48 years old, married to Charlie Lippy and living in Shady Point, Ok. She is listed as white on that census but likely was not reporting Native American lineage on the part of either of her parents. Both white and Choctaw Robersons lived in Leflore County at that time. Eliza is not on the Choctaw rolls of 1902, but by that time she was married to Lippy. I can verify that she had lived in Ok at least 22 years prior to the 1910 census, but hearsay tells me she was there from childhood. As I don't know which were her parents, I'm checking out all Oklahoma Robersons. Her family is reportedly from Tennessee and/or Missouri. Liza died in Noel, MO, while visiting her married daughter around 1915, and is buried there. Thank you, Rhonda Jordan rlb119@aol.com

Becky, I don't really have any information for you about the Vian Area, but when I was in High School, I worked for the LeFlore County School Superintendents office. They had school census records beginning in 1930 or 1932. Because the records were in a small paper books for each school they were beginning to fall apart and I spent my time putting these records on the computer. These records were accepted by the Social Security office as proof of age, so we copied lots of records for people who didn't have birth certificates. You might check to see if the County has a County Superintendents office and if they might be able to access those records for you. Some counties no longer have any "dependent" school districts, so not many County Superintendents offices left, but someone should know where there records are kept now. Good Luck to you. Shelley

Hi List! I belong on another list also and have found out there were school census' done in some other states. I was wondering if there were school census conducted in IT in the 1890's? I realize OK was not a state at that time, this is just a shot in the dark. I am aware of the Dwight Mission and will be checking records of theirs this month when I get to OKC. Does anyone know of any others in the Vian, Sequoyah Co. area? Thanks for any info. Becky (from FL)
I hope that this isn't considered an inappropriate post. Sometime in early 98, I was sent a couple of pages from The History of Adair County. The pages contained some information on to of my GGparents. I wrote to the Adair Gen. Society to see if I could purchase a copy of the booklet. I never received a reply. Two days ago, I recognized my label that I had put on an envelope with a .32 stamp. A .1 had been added and I received a letter saying that by popular demand, there was going to be a reprinting of the History. However, the cost and mailing is to be $50.. If someone has a copy of this History, I would like to e-mail some names of other ancestors to see if they are in this History. I don't want to spend $50 and get a history that only has information on the two GGparents that I already know about. I think there might be other ancestors that lived or past through Adair but I hate to shell out that kind of money to find that they are not mentioned. TIA Keith Lowrey
