Ah, well. I enjoyed it, for one. Thanks for sharing, anyway.
Hi, I am new to the list and this is my first post. I am seeking information on Alice Lion born in Oklahoma, said to be Cherokee, children, Ernest Eddington born March 3, 1886, Ralph Eddington, Glen Eddington, Orville Eddington, Carrie Eddington. I also missed the first parts of the Indian Pioneer Papers, could someone send them to me please? Thanks, Barbara
I wonder if Jerita, a woman's name, could be an Amerind name? This would be in the area of North Carolina during the first half of the 1800's. Tim Walls (ggggrandson of Jerita Wall)
First, my husb. Clayton Gillberg [1942 LI, NY - ] is descended from Gwyndola Clayton [1919 OK - ] (It's Gyndola on her b.c., but she uses Gwyndola, because her mama said it was Gwyndola) who is the dau. of Abb Clayton and Malinda Davis Potts. THEIR "fam hist." says that Malinda and/or Abb was part Amerind. Depending on the day of the week and the moon phase, apparently, this is Creek or Cherokee. Second, my father's mother's father [him: Joel Sampson Smith, 1902 TX - 1984 CA; her: Harriet Mary or Mary Harriet Medlock Lawson Smith, 1864 TX - 1938 CA] Thomas or Charles Medlock, 1835 AR - 1918? TX was indeed a Medlock, and I read a 1930's archived report on the Medlocks, some of whom from AR/TN were Cherokee and decided not to go on the Long Walk. I don't know anything about it myself and only report the gist of what I read. Third, my dau. Lillye Beatrice Crocker Smith [1970 CA- ] m. Patrick Thomas Smith [1967 CA -] whose father was partially Oglala Sioux from NE, I believe he said. Fourth I have a maternal cousin Henry Howell last heard from in Madera CA who regularly attended the pow-wows [his word for the Amerind festivals and conventions] and he said he was all of nearly 75% plus Amerind. His father was James Malem Howell [1857 MO - 1926 OK] who was the s. of James Pinson Howell [1814 KY - 1865/70 TX] who was the father of Burrell Bertram/Bertran Howell [1836 KY - 1928 TX] who was the fa. of John Theordore Howell [1871 TX - 1945 TX] who was the fa. of Nancy Lee Howell Smith [1911 TX - 1997 CA] who was my mother so that makes us cousins of some degree. I'm not sure how Henry came to be 75% Amerind, since it doesn't compute, unless James Malem's mother was also Amerind and since she [Malinda Pemberton 1818 KY - 1871 TX] was also the mother of Burrell Bertram .... even supposing Henry's mother was full Amerind, would that - in the absence of note of Amerind desc in James Pinson Howell, Malinda Pemberton et al - would he be 75% Amerind? I don't think so, but so he said. With all that Amerind floating around in the family, how do I even begin to trace whether it's factual or fancy? Susan G.
Here is the continuing...index of the Indian Pioneer Papers--Western History Collection---University of Oklahoma. The Indian Pioneer History Papers is a collection of interviews done in 1937 & 1938, which includes biographical data on both living and deceased persons of Indian and pioneer heritage whose lives have been important in the history of Oklahoma. There is also a collection of information on family customs, tribal histories, social organizations, folklore, legends, cemeteries, old trails, ferries, forts, trading centers and other unrecorded facts known only to oral tradition.
