Their address is Oklahoma Historical Society, Indian Archives, 2100 N. Lincoln Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73105-4997. They will also let you do research yourself for free. Copies are still $.50 a page, or $5 for a Dawes Roll census card package. They're open weekdays and on Saturday (but they close for lunch on Saturdays--I don't know if they also close for lunch on weekdays.) You must bring a picture ID. They have copies of the Dawes Rolls on microfilm, and copies of the Indians and Pioneers interviews done by the WPA. All of the Cherokee tribal land holdings in Arkansas were abolished in the 1825 treaty- and all of the Cherokee citizens were removed into Indian Territory by 1830, as evidenced by their claims for improvements abandoned when they removed. Some keep their maiden, or so says the Native Americans I worked with." -- Bessie ~~ Bessie- Different tribes have had different traditions at various times in history. But this person was speaking specifically about the Guion Miller Roll and 1907/09 era That roll was exclusively Cherokee, and at that time in history the women were listed by their married names. In the many years that I have worked in these records, I have never seen them shown by anything other than their married name. Can you give me a specific example (roll and application number) of one being shown otherwise? Jerri Chasteen ~~~

    3. Hi jc, or others who may know, I have started searching for information on the parents of my g-grandmother, Rebecca Hatcher, who I believe may be Indian. I have the name Maude and Margaret for the mother, (maybe Maude Margaret or Margaret Maude) and William for the father. I looked at a Hatcher web page that indicated a Maudie Hatcher on the Guion Miller Roll of the Eastern Cherokee, with a number 20723, and there were 4 Williams, one of whom was a guardian and one who was probably his son. These two had numbers 21076 and 20727, and the other two Williams were 21080 and 20692. Is there an easy way to use these numbers to find out more about these people so I can learn if any of them are my relatives? Rebecca Hatcher married William Jasper Dailey b 1841 in IN. Rebecca was b 1844 in MO or OH. They are the parents of my grandmother, Hester Ellen Dailey b 1884 in KS and m Bookard Elias Dooley in OK in 1898. Thanks for your time. Linda
