It seems that there were certain set social levels, or clans, and one was in the level, or clan, they were born into. The government was matriarchal, i.e. the authority was passed down through the female and not the male. Each clan level had it's own name. One of these levels, or clans, was named "Wind". The "Wind" clan was the top level, or ruling clan. Male children born to a female in the Wind clan were eligible to be chosen as a "chief", or a leader in some capacity. A young female in the Wind clan was known as a "Princess" of the 'Wind" clan. I found this to be very interesting. Seems like one always finds out something new. As it turned out, I was able to trace the Weatherford line to one William Weatherford. (A g-g-grandfather). His mother was named "Sehoy" and she was a "Princess of the Wind". William (Indian name was Red Eagle) led the Creeks against Andrew Jackson at the Battle of the Bend in 1814. He lost. Jim

Oklahoma Place Names: Goodwater is in McCurtain Couty, 12 miles east of Idabel. A post office from Dec. 19, 1894, to Feb. 28, 1959, it took its name from nearby Goodwater Creek, a tributary of Little River. Sharon Hunter wrote: > > Has anyone ever heard of a Goodwater, Ok. Does anyone know where I might find census or marriage records in IT, during the 1880-1900 time frame. I am looking for the surname of a Jessie, whom may have been Cherokee. She married Harmon Theodore Swearingen(a photographer), sometime between 1885-1897. They appear on the 1910 Logan Co., OK census, along with their son Audley Paul Swearingen. There is a tie to Washington Co., OK, and someone named Whiteturkey. I found the following in the online card file of OK University: Appraisals (1905) issued by the Townsite Commission of the Cherokee Nation and a land patent (1907) for lots in Ramona, Indian Territory; lease (1909) for land in Washington County, Oklahoma; and a work permit (1895) issued by the Cherokee Nation to a citizen, Whiteturkey, allowing him to hire a non-citizen to farm his land. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Cheryl ColORRed@inconnect.com
What else does the society have? I need like census from 1900-1920. Land records may be... No telling what else.. Thanks... Cathy
The Oklahoma Historical Society charges $15 for research + $5 for a copy of a Dawes Roll census card package or .50 a page for other copies for non-Oklahoma residents. They charge just the copy fees (not the $15) for Oklahoma residents. Their address is Oklahoma Historical Society, Indian Archives, 2100 N. Lincoln Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73105-4997. The Choctaws never (in recorded history) occupied any part of South Carolina and "a chief" would not have been living away from the tribe. See the pre-removal Eastern Nations Map at http://www.cherokee.net jc
Where would I begin to look for an ancestor that I am told was a Choctaw Chief in South Carolina. He had a daughter called Princess of the Wind who was raised by a family named Walden. I only know the name of the family who raised the child. Any suggestions on where to begin??? I'm doing some research for a friend and a name that keeps popping up is WARD. Does anyone have any clues? First name is HESPIE (maybe a different spelling).
Does anyone have any information on an older brother of Ezekial Proctor named Johnson Proctor son of Willaim Proctor and Dicey Downing. I am trying to locate the place of his burial and ANY OTHER information. 1)Johnson was born in Georgia (no date). Brothers and sisters were: 2)Sarah Proctor m. Edward Foreman, 3)Elizabeth Proctor m. James Kesterson, 4)Adam Proctor, 5)Archibald Proctor, 6)Ezekial Proctor m. 1) Rebecca Mitchell 2)Margaret(Peggy) Denton nee Downing 3) Jane Harlan 4) Eliza Chaney Welch, 7) Rachel Proctor, 8) Nannie Proctor m. Abraham Sixkiller. Johnson was killed at the Goingsnake Court House shoot-out on April 15 1872. He was married to Elizabeth Foreman. I have been to the Johnson Cemetery, (located 5mi. west of Siloam Springs Ark. in eastern OK., where Zeke is buried and his brother Johnson wasn't there. I read that Johnson's wife came and got his body, but it didn't say where she took it. Please if anyone can be of assistance, please let me know! Linda Mathis- East Texas
In response to sarah@teelfamily.com, regarding how to order Dawes enrollment packet for Edda Mae Huddleston: Sarah: We have corresponded before. To order the "enrollment packets" for the Dawes Card for Etta Mae Huddleston contact the Friends of the Oklahoma Historical Society at the following website: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Aegean/7673/ . I am fairly certain they can send you this. I think the cost is about $10 to $15. My record is that Etta Mae and her sisters Opal and Laura are the daughters of Horace H. HUDDLESTON b abt 1870 and Lillian Alma WARD (1876-1901) married in 1895. I have not been able to find Horace's parents yet. Lillian WARD is the daughter of my great grandfather Joseph Lynch WARD, a Judge of the Cherokee Nation in the Delaware OK district. I have traced Joseph's ancestry back to his Irish ancestor Benjamin WARD in Ireland. His direct ancestry on the maternal side goes through some of the earliest known Cherokee Chiefs. Lillian WARD is the sister of my grandmother Etta Estella WARD. Lillian is buried in the Joe Ward Cemetery in Jay, OK, named after her father. I have pictures of her and Joseph if you are interested. Paul Edgar TEEL was a close friend of my aunt Gladys PACE, who he stayed with for awhile in my home town of Portland, OR. If you decide to order the "enrollment packet" I would like to know what you find. I understand that they provide quite a bit of information. Is there anything else you would like to know about your direct ancestors? Gordon W. Pace siriuspace@aol.com
Hi, I found my ancestor Etta M. Huddlestun on the Dawes Rolls. I found her in the index, and then I found her little card with her parents and everything. I've heard that you can get a copy of the orginal application for the Dawes rolls, but try as I might, I can't figure out where you can get this. Is there someplace I can write who has the applications? Or what? Thanks, Sarah M. Teel P.S. I live in Alaska, so I can't go anywhere.
Jerri, thanks a lot for the maps. First time I had seen the one for 1820. Sharolyn

> KARLA KT SHAHAN <ktshahan@juno.com> Evening KARLA KT. While I enjoy receiving messages, your emails, all four, had the same time on each email and each email was a copy of the same message. I don't know if you are even aware of sending four. Yup, I rcd. four copies of Indian Territory Roots from you. I believe you were so upset by the events of this morning you may not have known you did it. I too am saddened for all families that has someone brutally murdered, and with the school children, they may be traumatised for some time. Take Care Martha

They have one gunman in custody, but they think there is another. They have 1 confirmed death & 7 injured. Its 12:12 pm my time in Idaho & I heard this less than an hr. ago. I just heard about the number of people hurt just before I got connected. How terrible. Why would anyone do something so sick, they couldn't be mad about not finding info. on their ancestor's. Hopefully, I will hear more on this & get those answer's. I just thought this would be of interest. Alli

We may never know why this senseless act has occurred either. My prayers & thoughts are sent for the families. Alli
