His father is shown as William and his mother is shown as Anniwakie (or Amiwakie) Wildcat, and they were all full-bloods. If this is the same person, you may order his Dawes application-- but the best information might come from his mother's Guion Miller application (#17169) which should show all of his family back at least two generations. You can order these copies from the OK Historical Society (see their site at http://www.ok-history.mus.ok.us/). Good luck jc
"WATTS" From: "Leta Harrell" <letah@hotmail.com> "Cherokee Old Timers" written by James Manford Carselowey. Where did he find this information? On page 91 Early Settlers in Northwest Arkansas he mention a Jacob Watts I would like to find out more information on this Jacob Watts. In 1845 Jacob Watts was in Washington Co.,AR and lived there until ca 1862. Found Jacob Watts listed on the 1865 Greenwood County, Kansas state census. I had a cousin tell me he died in Kansas ca. 1868. ~~~ Leta- Back in the days of the depression, the US started what was known as "The WPA Projects" ("Works Progress Administration"). Each state was given "XXX" number of $$ (according to population), and a choice as to what programs their state would use it for. Oklahoma had several, but one was-- "The Indian and Pioneer Interview of Oklahoma". These interviews are contained in 110 volumes of at least 700 pages per volume. The state hired 75 people to go out and interview the elderly population of the state. While it was done rather late (1930's), these interviewers were talking to people between 70 and 105 years old-- and THESE people were talking about their early lives, their neighbors, events, and even their own grandparents! James Manford Carselowey was a historian, but he was also one of those 75 interviewers! He made notes and later published five books: "Indian Territory Notes"; "Cherokee Notes"; "Cherokee Old Timers"; "Cherokee Pioneers" and "My Journal", and I have found that the source of most of his information came from these WPA Interviews. The entire collection is available at the Oklahoma Historical Society (POOR index!), but the microfilm may be viewed at several other repositories across the U.S. I understand that in the near future, the Historical Society is planning to make this entire collection available on CD-Rom, and will be "searchable" by surnames and locations. It will be a great resource for researching in Oklahoma! Regards Jerri Chasteen
All those says we take for granted are based on trials and tribulations of our ancestors. Lynn Life in the 1500's Anne Hathaway was the wife of William Shakespeare. She married at the age of 26. This is really unusual for the time. Most people married young, like at the age of 11 or 12. Life was not as romantic as we may picture it. Here are some examples: Anne Hathaway's home was a 3 bedroom house with a small parlor, which was seldom used (only for company), kitchen, and no bathroom. Mother and Father shared a bedroom. Anne had a queen sized bed, but did not sleep alone. She also had 2 other sisters and they shared the bed also with 6 servant girls. (this is before she married) They didn't sleep like we do lengthwise but all laid on the bed crosswise. At least they had a bed. The other bedroom was shared by her 6 brothers and 30 field workers. They didn't have a bed. Everyone just wrapped up in their blanket and slept on the floor. They had no indoor heating so all the extra bodies kept them warm. They were also small people, the men only grew to be about 5'6" and the women were 4'8". SO in their house they had 27 people living. Most people got married in June. Why? They took their yearly bath in May, so they were still smelling pretty good by June, although they were starting to smell, so the brides would carry a bouquet of flowers to hide their b.o. Like I said, they took their yearly bath in May, but it was just a big tub that they would fill with hot water. The man of the house would get the privilege of the nice clean water. Then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was pretty thick. Thus, the saying, "don't throw the baby out with the bath water," it was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. I'll describe their houses a little. You've heard of thatch roofs, well that's all they were. Thick straw, piled high, with no wood underneath. They were the only place for the little animals to get warm. So all the pets; dogs, cats and other small animals, mice, rats, bugs, all lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery so sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Thus the saying, "it's raining cats and dogs." Since there was nothing to stop things from falling into the house they would just try to clean up a lot. But this posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings from animals could really mess up your nice clean bed, so they found if they would make beds with big posts and hang a sheet over the top it would prevent that problem. That's where those beautiful big 4 poster beds with canopies came from. When you came into the house you would notice most times that the floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt, that's where the saying "dirt poor" came from. The wealthy would have slate floors. That was fine but in the winter they would get slippery when they got wet. So they started to spread thresh on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on they would just keep adding it and adding it until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. So they put a piece of wood at the entry way, a "thresh hold". In the kitchen they would cook over the fire, they had a fireplace in the kitchen/parlor, that was seldom used and sometimes in the master bedroom. They had a big kettle that always hung over the fire and every day they would light the fire and start adding things to the pot. Mostly they ate vegetables, they didn't get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner then leave the leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes the stew would have food in it that had been in there for a month! Thus the rhyme: peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old." Sometimes they could get a hold of some pork. They really felt special when that happened and when company came over they even had a rack in the parlor where they would bring out some bacon and hang it to show it off. That was a sign of wealth and that a man "could really bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and they would all sit around and "chew the fat." If you had money your plates were made out of pewter. Sometimes some of their food had a high acid content and some of the lead would leach out into the food. They really noticed it happened with tomatoes. So they stopped eating tomatoes, for 400 years. Most people didn't have pewter plates though, they all had trenchers, that was a piece of wood with the middle scooped out like a bowl. They never washed their boards and a lot of times worms would get into the wood. After eating off the trencher with worms they would get "trench mouth." If you were going traveling and wanted to stay at an Inn they usually provided the bed but not the board. The bread was divided according to status. The workers would get the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family would get the middle and guests would get the top, or the "upper crust". They also had lead cups and when they would drink their ale or whiskey. The combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days. They would be walking along the road and there would be someone knocked out and they thought they were dead. So they would pick them up and take them home and get them ready to bury. They realized if they took their time about it, the person would wake up. Also, maybe not all of the people they were burying were dead. So they would lay them out on the kitchen table for a couple of days, the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wakeup. That's where the custom of holding a "wake" came from. Since England is so old and small they started running out of places to bury people. So they started digging up some coffins and would take their bones to a house and re-use the grave. They started opening these coffins and found some had scratch marks on the inside. One out of 25 coffins were that way and they realized they had still been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on their wrist and lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night to listen for the bell. That is how the saying "graveyard shift" was made. If the bell would ring they would know that someone was "saved by the bell" or he was a "dead ringer". How about that? Sandi Col. Try - http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/ The link for the Indian Pioneer Papers Index is listed under "New Stuff". You'll find the index Gay submits weekly - several HOWELL names listed, but no interviews submitted. The index for ROBERTSON hasn't been transcribed, yet. You will also find a new link "Other facilities with microform copies of the Indian Pioneer Papers" - maybe you have one near you. If you know of other facilities, please let me know. Has anything been written, or are there any websites currently, regarding the possibility of people of color trying to sneak in as NA to the roll lists? Black Irish, Mulattos, Black Dutch, Sephardic Jews, Gypsies, Travellers, Melungeons? Is this what was called the Intruders?
To all fellow researchers, If I was to lookup a family member that might be either Choctaw(Mississippi Band) or Cheeokee(Eastern Band) what microfilm might I need to look at. My local library has a book that list a lot of different films. Thank you for your time. Al

Hello, I am searching for information on my great grandfather, Elisha Sharp LOCKE, and his two brothers - Victor M. (Moreau or Murat) LOCKE and Dr. Benjamin Franklin LOCKE Jr. The three brothers were the sons of Benjamin Franklin LOCKE Sr. and Mary SHARP. All three brothers were born in Decatur, Meigs Co., TN. Victor on 1 AUG 1846; Benjamin on 28 MAY 1851; and Elisha on 14 JUN 1854. After the Civil War in about 1866, all three brothers came to Indian Territory, in the area of Skelton Depot, Lukfata - now McCurtain Co., OK. Victor married Susan P. McKINNEY there sometime in 1871, then they moved to Skulleyville, Doaksville, and then to near the town of what would be Antlers, OK - which Victor is credited for Founding the town of Antlers at the site of the spring and his Frisco Railroad Way Station. Victor died on 5 JAN 1929, and was buried 'in the private burial ground on his estate in the western part of Antlers' on 7 JAN 1929. This 'private burial ground' came to be called the LOCKE cemetery and was deeded to the City of Antlers as a historical site by one of his daughters, 'to be cared for "in perpetuity" - however the application for a Historical Site never came to be, and in the late 1960's/early 1970's, the City of Antlers sold the property to a Housing Contractor, and all but a very FEW of around 100 graves were 'covered up' by houses and gardens. Sad, for V. M. LOCKE Sr. was single-handedly responsible for most of the early housing in Antlers, because he purchased 'bottom-land' plots when the town charter was being laid out, and then supplied new settlers with these housing plots for no more than the cost of a Quitclaim Deed and his promise that the settlers would have a permanent homesite. Benjamin married Hattie WILSON in 1875. Elisha Sharp LOCKE married Jane Elizabeth ("Janie") DAVENPORT, daughter of Barney DAVENPORT and Selina YARCOMBY (YARCOMBE/YARCUMBY/???), on 24 DEC 1894. They lived on a large area of land on the old road between Antlers and Ethel, and were well known for their cattle and dairy products. Jane was full-blood CHOCTAW. Elisha died 29 JUL 1913 in Antlers, OK. Jane died 2 JAN 1929 in Antlers, OK. Together they had 5 children - Elisha Frank LOCKE (my grandfather), Mary LOCKE (died as an infant), Bertie Helen LOCKE, Jesse ("Jeff") LOCKE, and Archer ("Arch") Marion LOCKE. They had a half sister from Jane's previous marriage to Julius HAMPTON - her name was Susan ("Hook") HAMPTON. I am looking for any and all information concerning these LOCKE families, and the McKINNEY, DAVENPORT, YARCOMBY (sp?), WILSON, WAGNER, and HAMPTON families also. I would like to find out about the places Skelton Depot, Lukfata (now McCurtain Co.), Skulleyville, Doaksville, and Antlers, OK. The information I know is what I have entered above, so please feel free to offer as MUCH as you know. I want to put all of the family back together again, and create a Family History. Thank you for your help. Kevin D. Clapp - great grandson of Elisha Sharp LOCKE & Jane Elizabeth DAVENPORT mac-tire@nts-online.net Researching LOCKE, YARCOMBY(sp?), DAVENPORT, WILSON, HAMPTON, McKINNEY, and WAGNER Families of Southeastern Indian Territory - now Oklahoma.
