Maybe it will "stir" something up. Why in the world do some people want to be kin to an Indian? Over the years I've seen people want to get into the DAR or the Mayflower bunch or some other "status" group and it has turned me off. Same for folks who seem to think there is some kind of status in being kin to an Indian. How often do we hear something like, "My grandmother was supposed to be full/half/quarter (take your pick) Indian. I even heard one lady "brag" about some supposed kin of her's that she said was a "three-feather Cherokee princess", whatever that's supposed to be. My grandmother used to tell us kids that our grandfather's, grandfather was some famous Indian chief in Alabama in the early 1800's. Because of this story, this was the LAST line I did when I began doing research. I figured it was just another one of those "Indian stories". As it turned out my grandmother was right, but does it make me any different because some guy 180 years ago was an "Indian"? He was no different from any other of my ancestors. Was he more "noble" or "braver" than my other ancestors. Not in my opinion. So what's the big deal with having an Indian in your "closet". Jim
It looks like I am back on the I.T. list. I hope I didn't miss much. WADO, Keith
Looking for information on Isaac and Sophie (Sophia) RILEY. I know nothing of them other than they had a daughter "Frances", b 1858 in Eufala, IT who married an Elijah BROWN and lived in IT(OK). Apparently Sophie was 1/2 Creek as their children are on the Dawes Roll. The town listed for their enrollment is Hickory Ground. Children of Elijah BROWN and Frances RILEY are: Pete b abt 1875 Joe b abt 1877 Lucinda b abt 1877 Charlie Bud b Aprpil 6, 1897 in Krebs, IT Daryl Brown tbrown@ionet.net
Want to thank everyone for their help. Now I have something to go on in my search.
In my notes I have a Harmon who married a Winton woman in Texas...Hunt or Fannin or Hopkins or Delta County. If this sounds familiar I will dig out my notes. Peggy in Texas
I know I am not very smart so need to have someone explain the following to me. I know that Isaac and Sophie are man and wife but don't know what the other two are. Can anyone tell me if there is a 1900 census for Indian Territory? Does anyone have access to it, if it exists, or can you tell me how I can get a copy? I'm looking for GAYLOR, GUNTER, JENNINGS, REAVES AND LOWERY. I'm pretty new at this and I could really use some help. Thank you, Brenda S.
Hello Harmon researchers!! Do any of you have any connections to a Martha Jane Harmon m. Isaiah Matney, believe her mother's name was Elizabeth. Don't know her dad's name or siblings. Understand per family history this Martha Jane and her mother are on the rolls somewhere, but where I cannot find, supposedly Cherokee, although they could be from another tribe altogether. Hope we can match up here!! Linda

Jerri, I printed your message to me that I was already on the list. The print out was six full pages plus one line on a seventh sheet. I did not have an enlarged line. I couldn't tell if one was highlighted or not. The message that you sent does show that I attempted to subscribe on Sat, 5 Jun 1999 at 20:57:49. I just sat down at my puter and had 59 messages. Most all of them were from another list. I finally received one posted by Charlene at 8:23 today in which she indicated that she had not been getting any mail. As I wrote to you directly, I have not received any I.T. mail for over a week. I did send a message to subscribe after you acknowledged that I was on the list. I did not receive an acknowledgement, and still did not receive any I.T. mail, so that is why I made another effort. I was going to write back to you directly but am putting this on the list, 1, so there will be mail to look for on the list and 2, to see if anyone else has had a problem. Frankly, the mail on the I.T. list is a lot more interesting that the other list that I subscribed to about ten days ago. WADO, Keith
Jim-- ONE slight correction! "Greer County" was in Oklahoma Territory-- not Indian Territory. If you haven't already done so, you might want to check the 1900 census of Oklahoma Territory for more information. It does have a Soundex, by the way. jc James Milton wrote: > jc, > Seeing that it is a little slow on this sight, I will quit being a > "lurker" and see if I can get or give a little information on people I > have listed in my family tree. > William Johnson MELTON, b. I promised to do this a while back, but family problems caught me for a while. The following is an index of surnames (abridged version) that could be found in or related to a Hobbs in IT on the 1900 census (as stated in Helen Handley's "Hobbs Connections in IT & TX, 1900).
