Oklahoma did not become a state until 1907 and really didn't much enforce the registration of births until about 1915. The applications to search and order a birth certificate are accessible from the OK USGenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/ --- click on "Vital Records". Since you have her parents names from the SS application, you might want to try to find them on the 1900 US census of Indian Territory. There is a Soundex available, and its a good thing! The counties were not yet formed, and Indian Territory was listed by Nations. Di

    3. Joyce asked; "I found in the Guion Roll the surname England on Indian Territory in which I am searching. Can someone tell me how I can find out more about the Englands on that roll? ~~~~~~~~~~ Joyce, Those who were shown as applicants on the Guion Miller roll would have listed about three generations back from the person making the application. You can order these applications ($5.00 each) from Indian Territory Genealogical Society, c/o John Vaughn Library, Tahlequah OK 74464. Be sure to give both the name of the applicant and the Guion Miller number (NOT the same as the number listed in the books "Cherokee Roots" by Bob Blankenship!). As to finding more information- you might want to look at the listing of the England family in the book: "History of the Cherokee Indians" by Emmet Starr (interlibrary loan?) page 454. Which "Winston County" are you talking about - AL or MS? jc

I received an article from a book called The Winston County Heritage stating my gr gr grandfather Alexander England was Cherokee Indian. I spoke to some people that said it wasn't a proven fact. I found in the Guion Roll the sur name England on Indian Territory in which I am searching. Can someone tell me how I can find out more about the Englands on that roll? Thanks, Joyce

    1. [IT ROOTS] Caddo, IT, OK - Birth Records
    2. Sharon A Bohan
    3. With a silent prayer, I am hoping that someone on this list can help me locate a birth record on my great aunt. Until today, I had always thought that she was born in Quanah, Texas. After a three plus month wait, I received a copy of her social security application and she was born in Caddo, IT. Her name was Emma Josephine CARTER; she was born on 29Sep1903. She died on July 14, 2000. She was my second mother and my mentor. I miss her terribly and only hope that someone can help me find out more about her. She hardly talked about the family. Her mother died when she was 5 and her dad was a railroad man. The family was supposedly part Cherokee (she was born to Oliver Reynolds CARTER and Frances Simmons CARTER). The family never talked about the Cherokee ancestry and unfortunately, I was not into genealogy until recently. Many thanks for taking the time to read this. Sharon

    3. Hello List. Has anyone ever heard of the African American organization known as "Pilgrims Rest Chamber"? Does anyone know what they did? They were apparently going in the late 1800's & early 1900's. I found this reference on a tombstone while doing a cemetery registry in Murray Co., OK. Also has anyone ever heard of a group that black women belonged to known as the "House of Ruth"? This reference is also on tombstones of that period. Thanks, Dennis

    1. [IT ROOTS] New Guion Miller Roll cd-
    2. Jerri Chasteen
    3. --------------A548DEE87E3DD7EE62DEBE2D Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit C asked (private message); "is the new Guion Miller CD the same as the Cherokee By Blood books"? No- this CD is not the same as what is in the Cherokee-by-Blood books. Let me first explain just "what" the CBB books are-- and what they are not: What the CBB books "are" is an indexed transcription of 12 rolls of m/film (#M685, rolls #001 through #012) of the Final Determination of all of the 90,000+ applicants' eligibility ("accepted" or "rejected"). The books do have advantages -- they are indexed, and some (not all) of the testimonies are listed with the entry in the books, while ALL of the testimonies are listed on the m/film, but on separate rolls of film. What the CBB books "are not" is FINISHED! The author has only transcribed and published about 60% of them through her latest vol #9 and there is no indication if the series will be finished, nor when. These application numbers run from #1 though #45857, with a few added that have no numbers because they were received after the deadline. CBB volume #9 ends at #27800! So if you are looking for a number that is higher than the last one in her volume #9, then just order the microfilm (rent or purchase) from American Genealogical Lending Library. The CD is an alphabetical listing of all applicants taken from the General Index. It doesn't tell you if they were accepted or rejected- but it does tell you: Name, application number, sex, MAIDEN name (if female), what year they were born, where born (state/territory), their exact address (city, state/territory) where they were living when they filed (1908/09), and the Soundex code for that surname. This is an example of some of the listings extracted from the cd: MCKARTY, 10310, f, MCKARTY, Lula, , 0, CNW, MELVIN, CHEROKEE, OK, M263 MCKARTY, 11293, f, JOHNSON, Peggie, MCKARTY, 0, CNW, MELVIN, CHEROKEE, OK, M263 MCKAY, 5538, f, TUCKER, Annie, MCKAY, 1876, x, HULBERT, Cherokee, OK, M200 MCKAY, 5530, f, MCKAY, Charlotte, RATTLINGGOURD, 0, CNW, MELVIN, CHEROKEE, OK, M200 MCKAY, 9189, f, MCKAY, Lizzie, TEESGUNALL, 1856, CNW, MELVIN, CHEROKEE, OK, M200 MCKAY, 36044, f, MCKAY, Mattie, RAGAN, 1876, MS, HOLDENVILLE, Hughes, OK, M200 MCKAY, 13241, f, MCKAY, Nellie, CATCHER, 1844, CNW, HULBERT, Cherokee, OK, M200 MCKAY, 15182, f, MCKAY, Nora, , 1900, GA, TIGER, Rabun, GA, M200 MCKAY, 9190, m, MCKAY, Wilson, , 1856, IL, MELVIN, CHEROKEE, OK, M200 MCKECHAN, 12208, f, MCKECHAN, Susan Angeline, HALCOME, 1843, TN, ATHENS, McMinn, TN, M225 MCKEE, 13308, m, MCKEE, Alfred C, , 1878, x, PARK HILL, Cherokee, OK, M200 MCKEE, 42598, f, MCKEE, Annie, INGRAM, 1870, TN, MADISONVILLE, Monroe, TN, M200 MCKEE, 41507.11, m, MCKEE, Brackenridge, , 1890, TN, KINGSTON, Roane, TN, M200 The cd's name is "Vital Information From the Guion Miller Roll", the number is #0878 and may be order
