    1. [IT ROOTS] BULLOCKs in Indian Territory
    2. HELP !!! Can anyone tell me where to find out about the work permits people were supposed to have to be in the Indian Territory during the period 1888 - 1900 ?? Or the census or tax records, school records or ANY records for that period ?? I have three people in the line I'm researching who were born in Indian Territory and do NOT know which COUNTY it is now. I suspect they just got born there to frustrate me. Ho Well it sure did work. Two older children: Aaron Lenard BULLOCK & Roxie Maie BULLOCK may have been in school. Three children: 1. Nancy Price BULLOCK, b. 23 March 1890, 2. John Clarence Jerome BULLOCK, b. 10 April 1892, 3. Althea G. BULLOCK, b. 13 May 1897. The family lived in Ft. Worth, Tarrant Co.,TX just before they went there and moved back to TX somewhere just afterward. Any help will be greatly appreciated. On a previous query a responder told me about the work permit requirement. Someone, somewhere must have some records, I'd sure like to know who and where, then how can I get them or see them. Thanks for your time. Bill Barnette, Tucson, AZ. [email protected] Family of: Oscar Allen Rudolph BULLOCK & Mississippi Belle CASTLEMAN

    2. --part1_4e.113f204d.27b56259_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The following is another source for researching Indians in Indian Territory. It is found at Ancestry.com Nebraska Pawnee Scouts, 1861-69 [Subscribers Only] Description: As former "Indian Territory" Nebraska still had many Native American residents during the American Civil War. A number of these Indians volunteered to aid Union forces operating from the territory. This database is a list of these men and was compiled from records kept by the Adjutant General of the state. In addition to providing such information as residence and assigned unit, researchers will find both the scout's English and Indian name. To those seeking information about Native Americans from Nebraska between 1861 and 1869, this can be a helpful collection. Source Information: Debra Graden. Pawnee Scouts of Nebraska. Two things that struck me as odd - the above unsubscribe notification has a Precedence of "junk", whereas all of the other list messages have a Precedence of "list"; AND all other IT-Roots-L messages follow my mail rule to be moved to my "IT-Roots-L" mail folder, but the above stayed in my "Inbox". Something doesn't seem right about that. Has anyone else received any UNASKED-for unsubscribe notifications?!?!?!? Thanks for any help. Oh, and I immediately SUBSCRIBED again. Kevin D. 1. [IT ROOTS] TRAIL OF TEARS
    2. Jerri said: Easy answer: "no, there is no complete roster of names". We have been lucky to located a few of the Cherokee Removal rosters kept by the leaders of the groups which contain names (I believe only seven of eleven groups), but I don't know about the other tribes. In any event-there is no "complete list" as you had asked about. There were not just "one Removal group per tribe," as many people assume today! The people were broken into smaller groups because of the lessons learned in the first groups who lost so many from starvation! They tried to keep the later groups as small as was feasible and traveled different routes, hoping that they could purchase provisions from the farmers and merchants along the way. They believed by doing this they would get fresh food, not the wormy grain and spoiled meat that killed a number of our people, but "greed" and "compassion" are seldom bedfellows -- they STILL got the same food! There were lists of how many were provisioned during the removal, because the leaders of the groups were allowed a specific amount for each person. Those records do not contain names -- only "numbers," because they were much too busy just trying to survive to worry about recording names. Question: What are the seven groups and where can you get the information on them? Kathy

    2. Hello, A few weeks ago I read an article that explained why a person may not have a role number or be included in a census (even tho they were Am. Indian) and I thought I had saved it but now I can't locate it. Did anyone else read this ? The article mentioned that a person with a role number had limitations on their travels to stores etc. without a represintitave and that there were other reasons that a person might not have wanted to be included in a census. Thanks for your time. Patty -- Get your [email protected] email for FREE at http://Nameplanet.com/?su

Patty-- I don't think it was posted to Indian Territory Roots mail list -- or I would have definitely commented and corrected that misinformation. Those are stories that are usually designed and used to explain and/or excuse "why-my-ancestors-were-not-on-the-rolls-although-they-were-all-full-bloods". <g> Read and study the REAL history of the FCT's in Indian Territory (Angie Debo, Emmet Starr, Grant Foreman, Kent Carter- to name a few respected authors), and don't believe all that "you hear"! Ask for specific references, case histories and documentation. jc
