Hi. I know this is not genealogy, BUT, it does pertain to the subject of internet access. Thanks to Jerri for sharing this concept. My concern, as someone invested in the earth and its inhabitants, if this sends out damaging and blinding microwaves, what about birds flying above it looking down? And do the TV dishes already do this? Will it be like a mine field out there for wildlife? Just wanting to know before investigating technology which sounds great. susan ============================================================================= Susan Werstein Phone: (03) 467-5632 Country code: 64 8 Lothian St. Dunedin, New Zealand E-Mail: [email protected] ============================================================================= od
I also have the cable modem through the cable tv company. I am not sure of the speed off hand but it is very fast, and through the company that i am dealing with I did not have to purchase the modem, just rent it at $.500 a month, plus a 34.95 charge for the cable access. However purchasing the modem in the long run would probably be more economical. So you might check that out also.. I am saving $20.00 a month after I had the second phone line disconnected even though I am paying $20.00 more for the internet access, and you are on line constantly, you do not have to reconnect every time you turn on the computer, and I have never been knock off line since the installation. I love it. Susan Earnheart Terrell
Brothers and Sisters, Wind Chaser here, I have been running 580 kbts instead of the 56 kbts ever since last Christmas. I have been using Cable via cable television and a cable modem. The Cable modem is purchased for about $250.00 and the cost of the cable is $49.00 per month. You don't have to have anything put up and there is no harm to the environment. This way you don't have to have the second phone line, and the monthly expense for that. You still have a cost but not the cost of the monthly phone line. To all who have posted to the list and contacted me by e-mail. That is all of the information that I have on the DirecPC system-- Because it sounded interesting, I had scroll/copied that from another site, pasted it into an e-mail to send to myself (which I often do on things that I want to save) so that I could try to find out more information. THEN- I made a mistake! Instead of selecting my own address from my address book- I hit the wrong button and sent it to the list! Sorry about that--! Let's get back to genealogy and I promise not to send anything else until after I have my second cup of coffee of the morning <grin>. If I find more information about it- I promise to post the location address to the mail list. Jerri Chasteen
Very good point, Susan. I live by a hazard waste facility that took us over ten years to shut down, and I too, would be interested to know if there would be any danger, not only to the wildlife, but to us and our children. What is this??
I am doing look ups for those that requested, but I only have one book which is 112 pages including the index. It is the only book that was mentioned when I ordered it. Now I understand there are other volumes. So if others out there that still want me to help with Surname look ups, will do. Just wish that I had the other volumes. This one has a lot of information in it. Thanks Jan
AW My New Connection Wed Feb 21 18:20:11 2001 I just got back from Dallas Direcpc school. I got certified in the new two way Direcpc. You don't need a phone line to connect to the Internet. I was able to download at about 566k it sure is fast, I know that Tahlequah does not have a very fast speed but with this thing you will. You can not put up the dish yourself you have to let a Certified Installer do it because when it transmits it put's out a microwave signal that could burn out your eyes or maybe give you a tan real fast. My new system should be here in about two weeks. If you all want to see how it works I will show you up there when I am in town later on. It has to be mounted six feet in the air and it is heavy about sixty pounds. So you can only mount it on a six by six or in cement. You have to run win 98 SE are above and you need a usb port a pent. ll 366mhz or above. You can not belive how fast this thing is I had burst speeds up to 1200K. Here is a link to the co. website. http://www.pgtv.com/intro.asp Archie
