If you haven't already done so, you might want to search for them on the 1900 Indian Territory census Soundex and when you locate what nation they were living in, then view the entire information on the actual census page. That census actually lists more information than the 1910 or the 1920 census. Best jc

Hello, I was wondering if there are any good resources for tracking Eastern Cherokee who gave up lands in TN and took up lands in AR around 1817? Also, does anyone know how I might trace families who stayed in AR or TN after removal of their friends and possibly some members of their family? How would I best trace their family members who were removed from these states-AR & TN, including GA, between 1823 and 1845? Thank you for any suggestions, Cassie

Pat said: "My Great-grandfather was in Texas in 1880, but came to Oklahoma shortly after that. They lived in Braggs, Oklahoma. I found them either on the 1900 or 1910 census. His wife was SARAH PERRYMORE. Children; LONNY, CHARLOTTE MALINDA ( my grandmother) BEULAH, EVA, FANNY, and five other MOWERY that are unknown." ~~~~~~~~ Bingo! Prior to coming to Braggs, Indian Territory in 1891, John had lived 7 miles northeast of Clarksville, in Red River County TX. John's mother was Malinda (Gideon) Mowery, daughter of Francis Gideon. In his application John said that his grandfather; Francis Gideon was Cherokee, had been born & raised in NC and came to TX about 1840. But there was no evidence that anyone by the name of "Gideon" had ever been a citizen in the eastern nation, nor was anyone by that surname shown on the 1835 rolls of the eastern Cherokees. Francis Gideon had never been a resident/citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Indian Territory. If he were Cherokee, then he had left the tribe prior to the 1835 Henderson Roll taken in the east, and never went into the Cherokee Nation of Indian Territory and established his citizenship after his arrival in the west. One of the requirements for an applicant to be "readmitted to citizenship" (and included on the Dawes Roll) was that the applicant and/or their direct ancestor had to, at one time, been a RESIDENT/citizen of the (western) Cherokee Nation. Therefore- John and all of those who claimed through him were rejected. William was the oldest child listed by John- he was "age 24" in 1896 and married to Sarah- age 26. Their daughter was Stella, age 2. "Lonnie" was actually "Alonzo" (age 19), then Beula (age 16), Evea (age 12), Lottie (Charlotta? age 8) and (? could be Fannie- age 2). John had three witnesses, but they could only testify of living near them in TX and did not offer any evidence of Francis Gideon's prior residence with the tribe in NC. Hope this helps. :o) jc
Jerri, About the Oklahoma Archives, would that be the Muskogee library...Wally Waits Gen. Librarian? Would they have any application info for the Five Civ. they could photocopy? I would like to get some info from NARA.gov but am not sure the person listed is my ancestor and it IS expensive - especially those pesky misses. Any suggestions? We have relatives that applied in 1907 for the Dawes and were on the Creek Nation Cases lists. If we could access the applications and ascertain the names of their grandparents, location, etc.... Funny thing about our family HAWKINS, there are a billion David's, William's, Benjamin's, Lavonia's in IT.... I suspect there may be relation to Col. Benj. Hawkins, Indian Agent and Lavinia but no proof yet and I think one of ours might have been the illegitimate son. Anyone here from that family that can help? Pat said: " Jerri, Thank you so very much for explaining this for me. I wasn't sure about the case number". Pat, before you spend a bunch of money ordering document (it can get expensive!) better make sure this is your ancestor. Have you verified where your ancestor would have been living at the time of the 1880 and 1900 U.S. census? What was his wife and children's names? jc
Pat wrote: "I found my grandfather listed on the Dawes applications, but he is not listed on the rolls. There is a case number listed. My question, would I be able to obtain a copy of this application?" Pat, It's application #3414 and is on m/film roll 1650-42. It's not much of a copy- very dim. You can order a copy from the Nation Archives at Ft Worth, but tell them that it's not on the regular Dawes application-- it's one of those that were submitted in 1896. The Oklahoma Archives "may" have a copy of it- you can contact them at http://www.ok-history.mus.ok.us/library/introduc.htm. jc

Cathy, I'm in Oklahoma City, and I have been told by the State Health Dept (they handle the death/birth certs) that records start at 1907 when OK became a state. I don't know if the Chickasaw Tribal Nation itself kept those records or not. They are located in Ada, OK in Pontotoc county. Hope this helps. Jann
