O'siyo, I would also like to know if there is a roster of Cherokees who fought at Pea Ridge and how I can get a hold of copies of service records of those who fought in this battle. I am related to Sheltons, Morgans, Pigs, Lowery/Lowrys, and McDaniels who are thus all related. I would appreciate any information also these previously listed families who are all Cherokee. NOTE: My Sheltons are not those who married into the Bell family. He was a GGgson of Major George Lowrey. I have not been able to learn much about him except the following: He was born in the Cherokee Nation East, c 1821, married Anohie Bigbullet and had one child with her a Bowl Lowrey. He later married Lucy Fourkiller and had four children, Silas, Kate, Elis and my Ggf John Lowrey who was born near Stilwell. I had a date of death for William Lowrey of 1861 but have seen him on the roster of the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles-Holt's Squadron. And I have been told that he was in the battle of Pea Ridge. My Ggf John was born in 1845 or 46 and as far as I know was the youngest child of Lucy Fourkiller and William Lowrey. There is a Lowery and a Lowry on the Drennan roll of 1852. They both are on page 149. I would appreciate any information about how I might learn more about these people on the Drennan roll. Also, I would like to know if there is a listing of Cherokees who fought at Pea Ridge and those that were killed there. Why not just post it to the list. Thanks a bunch! Jann
Pam Barbour wrote: "http://www.Genealogy.com/ifa/ " (for 1900 census) Pam Perhaps you should also explain that this is a "Pay" site- requiring a subscription fee, and does not (at least at this time) have the Indian Territory census on-line. jc
Pam I would like to have it Thanks Barbara >From: "Pam Barbour" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: [IT ROOTS] 1900 Census >Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 21:03:32 -0600 > >I have the Url if anyone else needs it , I sent it to Carol/. > > >Pam > > >==== Indian-Territory-Roots Mailing List ==== >For full instructions to subscribe, unsubscribe and list rules, click on >http://www.rootsweb.com/~cherokee/welcome.html >To send an e-mail to the list owner: [email protected] > _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

And so what is the url, Pam?
Thanks everyone on advice about soundex. You would not believe the library in our community, it looks like all the books were donated in the 50's and 60's and not much new since then. In fact I donate all the books I purchase to local branch. Unfortunately for me the nearest LDS is about 50 miles away and so far the hours conflict with my work hours. And I thought I was moving to big city when left panhandle of Florida for central. :) Carol
What f your local library has NO genealogy information? How do you locate 1900 info then? Carol
I have the Url if anyone else needs it , I sent it to Carol/. Pam
Carol asked: "What f your local library has NO genealogy information? How do you locate 1900 info then? The library doesn't have to have "genealogical information". I don't know of one library in this country that can't order microfilm Just ask the librarian to order it for you--- or go to a different library. The LDS Church libraries will order it. jc
Wilkins wrote: " If you could would you post the link to the 1900 census soundex to the list for us" It isn't on Internet. The "link" is your own public library! You can order it (rental) on microfilm. jc
Halito Jeri If you could would you post the link to the 1900 census soundex to the list for us or e-mail([email protected]) Yakoke Elkdreamer >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Indian-Territory-Roots-D Digest V01 #45 >Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 11:00:55 -0700 > ><< message2.txt >> ><< message4.txt >> ><< message6.txt >> ><< message8.txt >> ><< message10.txt >> ><< message12.txt >> _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
John said; "<snip> I believe there is also a Wayandotte in southern Kansas, I don't recall whether it was still Indian Territory at that date"- "<snip> I've heard of Soundex before, but I'm not sure what it is. Do you know of a site that I can access for information?" No- there was no "Indian Territory" in the area that became Kansas after about 1840. I'm happy that you asked about the Soundex. It's one of the most important resources for doing genealogy and many newer genealogist do not know how to use it! By using it, you should be able to locate your ancestors in 1920, 1910, 1900 and (for those who had children "age 10 or younger" living in the household) the 1880. You need to have some idea as to what state that they were living in at the time of those census years, but you can get that information from the birth and death certificates of your parents, grandparents, (etc) that I KNOW you have already ordered <g>. First go to http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/guideslist.html and look over the list of "How to---'s. For the Soundex, click on Lesson #9. Try to figure out the coding method yourself first, but if you are unsure-- go to http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/soundex/soundex.html . At that site you can automatically get the code by just typing in the surname! Compare it to the coding that you did (instructions on the Rootsweb Lesson #9) to gain confidence that you CAN do it yourself. best of luck! jc
