    3. Royal statue anchors in `controversial' spot By Our Special Correspondent JAIPUR, MARCH 30. Against all odds, the former Queen Mother of Jaipur, Rajmata Gayatri Devi, has managed to get installed a statue of her late husband and former ruler, Sawai Man Singh II, in the middle of the prestigious Ram Niwas Garden here in the State capital. The 13-foot-tall statue of the former ruler and polo player, astride a horse, was unveiled by the Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, on the concluding day today of week-long celebrations in connection with Rajasthan Diwas. The occasion saw the presence of a good number of rulers of the former States of Rajputana which merged in a phased manner to form the present Rajasthan. They included the son of the late Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, Bhawani Singh, who had inherited him as king, the former ruler of Jodhpur, Gaj Singh, the former Mahrawal of Kota, Brajraj Singh and Raghuveer Singh, former king of Sirohi. The "panchloha''(made out of five metals) statue of the former king in army uniform--as he had fought in the World War II-- had been languishing for over four years in the sculptor's godown, before the present Chief Minister, herself from a former royal family, took up the cause sympathetically. Gayatri Devi herself and the Rajput Mahasabha, have borne the expenses which went into the making of the Rs.15 lakh statue which weighs a tonne. Of late Ms.Gayatri Devi has been expressing her anguish over the damage being caused to the beauty of the historic Pink City. The previous Congress Government in the State had remained indifferent to the pleas of Ms.Gayatri Devi, for choosing an appropriate spot for the installation of the statue. A major controversy was over the spot for the statue as the Rajput community and the "king loyalists'' went around scouting for a place for the former ruler, also the first Rajpramukh of Rajasthan, to take repose. In fact Ms.Gayatri Devi had approached even Dijvijay Singh, the then Chief Minister of the neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, to persuade his counterpart in Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, to allow the statue to find a place it "deserved''. Mr.Gehlot reportedly had taken a stand that in a democratic country there was no need to "idolize'' any former ruler. Mr.Gehlot's predecessor and now Vice President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat too was not very warm to the idea of the statue. Mr.Shekhawat was conspicuously not invited for the ceremony though he is in the State capital. The statue had gone abegging for a place as locations suggested for its installation ranged from the main entrance of the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, also named after the former ruler, and the Sanganer airport. Going by the spots previously debated upon the Ram Niwas Garden, which also houses the more than a century old monument, Albert Hall, is a prized location. "The State Government and the Jaipur Development Authority have done a disservice to the this great city by installing the statue in the middle of the Ram Niwas Garden, blocking the view of the historic Albert Hall,'' observed, Vimal Choudhary, senior advocate. "The Government of India rules do not permit installation of any structure within 300 metres of a protected monument like Albert Hall, which is 118 years old,'' he pointed out. "There is a case pending in the Rajasthan High Court on the use of the Ram Niwas Garden. The authorities have not taken the permission of the High Court for the installation of the statue,'' Mr.Choudhary alleged. In fact after a public interest writ filed by Ramchandra Kasliwal, the court of Justice Vinod Shanker Dave(now retired) had ordered the closure of the thoroughfare in the park and had sought strict norms to conserve the Park and the monument. Perhaps all is well that ends well. "It is a dream accomplished,'' the frail, octogenarian Ms.Gayatri Devi, her charm and radiance more or less intact, said in her brief address. She thanked everyone who helped her with the mission, especially the Chief Minister who showed "lot of sensitivity'' __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? 1. Raja of Coorg
    2. Henry Soszynski
    3. Greetings all, Whilst surfing the web, I came across the following bit of Information on the Coorg State. Raja Vira Rajendra II c1800-1863, last ruler of Coorg (1820/1834), was deposed, exiled and later allowed to travel to England, where he died and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetary. He had a daughter named Gauramma (1842-1864), who converted to the Chriatian faith, being baptized in 1852, taking the name of Victoria (Queen Victoria was a sponsor). She is said to have married a British Officer and gave birth to a son. After her death both husband and son are said to have disappeared from the records. Has anyone heard of this story and knows a bit more of the history of the Raja and his daughter, and her family? Cheers, Henry

    1. News Flash: Prince of Jodhpur in critical condition
    2. akshay chavan
    3. [India News]: Jaipur, Feb 19 : The condition of Shivraj Singh, India's star polo player and the only son of the erstwhile king of Jodhpur Gaj Singh, continued to be critical Saturday - a day after he met with an accident while playing the game. "Shivraj's condition is stable but critical," P.P.S. Mathur, superintendent of SMS Medical College and Hospital, told IANS. He said Shivraj has been kept on the Intracranial Pressure (ICP) monitor. An ICP monitor is used to check pressure within the skull. Senior neurosurgeons are looking after him. "We have put him under close observation and noted neurosurgeon Sanat Bhagwati, who was rushed from Mumbai, has already checked him up," Mathur said. He refused to give further details. The scion of the erstwhile royal family of Jodhpur suffered serious brain injuries after falling down from a horse while playing polo at the Rambagh polo grounds here Friday. Singh went into a coma soon after hospitalisation. The Britain-educated Shivraj, 29, was thrown off his horse while trying to turn his moving horse during a fast paced polo match here. The incident occurred just minutes after the start of the match. Shivraj suffered severe head injuries and started to vomit. Within minutes he was rushed to the nearby SDMH Hospital from where he was referred to the government-owned SMS Hospital. Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Governor Pratibha Patil and Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje rushed to the hospital on hearing the news. Shivraj had on earlier occasions suffered serious injuries when he was involved in a similar kind of accident during a polo match two years ago in Jodhpur. --Indo-Asian News Service ____________________________ Rajan Mahan Saturday, February 19, 2005 (Jaipur): The condition of Shivraj Singh, the Prince of Jodhpur's former royal family remains critical. Shivraj has been in coma since he fell off his horse during a polo match in Jaipur last evening. Often considered one of India's most eligible bachelors, 27-year-old Shivraj is the only heir to a family fortune that runs into hundreds of crores. Serious injury Rajasthan's polo fraternity remains stunned by the serious injury to one of its rising young stars. Shivraj Singh lost balance and fell off his horse while trying a difficult shot on the Rambagh Polo grounds in Jaipur that left him with a severe head injury. "As soon as I saw he had fallen we rushed. He still had his helmet on. So I thought he has shut his eyes because may be he has winded. But while taking off his helmet I called out ''Shivraj'' but there was no response. He was breathing, but he was completely lost," said Uday Kalan, Polo player. As the only heir to the Jodhpur royal family, a slew of important visitors including Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje have come in to enquire about Shivraj's condition. But doctors say while he is now responding to the treatment, his condition still remains critical. "He is still critically ill and serious. But his responses are now much better than earlier," said Dr P P Mathur, neurosurgeon, SMS Hospital, Jaipur. "He has started opening his eyes and moving his hands. Initially he was not moving his hands or feet at all," Mathur added. Lack of facilities But despite being a VIP patient, even Shivraj had to be rushed to a private hospital for a CAT scan today as the CT scan machine at the SMS government hospital has been out of order for nearly two months. It is a severe indictment of the lack of facilities at Rajasthan's biggest government hospital. _____________________________________________ Dipti Agarwal Monday, February 21, 2005 (Mumbai): Indian polo star Shivraj Singh has been shifted to Mumbai following an injury sustained in the field on Saturday. Shivraj has been operated upon successfully but he continues to be in a coma and the road to recovery may be long and difficult. "There was swelling in his head. In the surgery we cut the scalp and let the pressure ease so the swelling could move out," said Dr S N Bhagawati, the Neurosurgeon looking after the player. Shivraj, the only heir of the former royal family of Jodhpur, sustained severe head injuries after he fell off his horse during a polo match in Jaipur on Saturday as he was trying to play a difficult shot. A promising player of the Rajasthan polo fraternity, 27-year-old Shivraj has represented India in several international polo events. ___________________________________________ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? 3. Henry, Wonder if this bit of information would be of general interest. Perhaps you could also put it up on the site. re the princely state of Wankaner, A scios on this family is one of the trustees of the organisation I work for. An expert on Indian wildlife and natural history, Dr Ranjitsinh has authored many books, including Beyond the Tiger: Portraits of Asian Wildlife. Born in the princely house of Wankaner, Ranjitsinh joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1961, and held several environment-related jobs. As Forests and Tourism Secretary to Madhya Pradesh, he was responsible for the creation of 14 national parks and 11 sanctuaries. Later, he drafted the key Wild Life (Protection) Act of 1972, and served as India's first Director of Wildlife Preservation. Ranjitsinh is perhaps best known for his work on Project Tiger , but he also played a crucial role in bringing back from the brink the endangered central and eastern barasingha. The eastern barasingha, cervus d. Ranjitsinhi, is named after him. Apparently he is the second son of the present ruler HH Maharana Raj Saheb PRATAP SINHJI regards Arjun Rammohan
