    1. Re: [INDIA-ROYALTY] Diwan Jarmani Dass' sponsored writing
    2. I have a copy of LIVES OF THE INDIAN PRINCES, by Charles Allen and Sharada Dwidvedi, and I will turn to that next as both authors are recommended by the group. I looked up all three authors on www.bookfinder.com, the best source I know of for out-of-print books, and found no relevant title by Ian Copeland. But Charles Allen has written lots of books about India and Africa under British rule, and I will explore these. Many thanks for the suggestions, and any others that may come to mind (recommendations of scholarly books welcome as well as popular ones). 1. Re: [INDIA-ROYALTY] Diwan Jarmani Dass' sponsored writing
    2. Learning that the book was sponsored makes things a little clearer. I'm sure there were lots of excesses under princely rule but it wasn't ALL excess and extravagance and arbitrary irresponsible misgovernment and kidnapping and sexual athletics. It couldn't have been. For one thing, it is hard to see why the British, who were often glad of a chance to take over the management of a mismanaged state, would have tolerated this kind of thing on the scale Diwan Jermani Dass suggests. A book of salacious stories is fun to read, but I would be grateful to the group for suggestions of more balanced books on 19-20C state government. Many thanks -- I am gratified by the feedback and glad to be part of this group. The sponsor was non other then Mrs. Indira Gandhi, who got against Royals families out of jealously she had with Rajmata Scindia and Rajmata Gayatri Devi of Jaipur, both ladies of great grace and both being her political opponents. The pre independence books against Royals were also sponsored by the congress party, which is a well known fact. Apparently immediately after the states acceded to the Union, all 9 gun salutes were allowed the style of HH by the Government of India. If you look to the bottom of the RoyalArk Salute page, you will see that the above is correct. Anyway the general rule of thumb is, if you are unsure what the correct title is, use the higher title, I don't think any 'ruler' would be offended by that. Just my 2 cents worth. Cheers, Henry

The combined attitutes and workings of the princely states brought change of power into British hands and again to some extent contributed to free India. You may want to read several books like Arbindo Ghose's Rebirth of India to get an idea on the dark ages of India and the shortsightedness of its leadership.
