Dear Listers, I had this reply from my Headmaster, David Stewart, of Mount Hermon School (1954 - 63), and hope it will clear up the question of Senior and Junior Cambridge Examinations. Jim Sinclair ----- "In my day, the Cambridge Exams (I don't know about JC, we only sent students up for SC) . the exams were world-wide, and were set and marked, as with, say, British students, by a Board in Cambridge. The name was something like "Local Examinations Syndicate" I remember the Anglo-Indian Inspector, West Bengal, telling me gleefully that the Indian students received an average grade for Religious Knowledge several grades higher than their British counterparts. This arrangement was changed somewhere in the late 60s, I think, for a Central Board in India to take ccntrol, most if not all papers being set in India, but I cannot give you more details. I think the HSC, which we sat, was still centred from Cambridge, but I am not sure if that later changed. I imagine an enquiry to the Registrar of University of Cambridge might elicit definite details. The interesting thing about Mount Hermon is that, although it was initially run by Americans, when it became Mount Hermon, if not before, they deliberately decided to follow the British system, and connect with Cambridge. Yes, I know Malaysia used Cambridge, and I guess other British-connected states like Ceylon and Burma and maybe Hong Kong. But from personal knowledge I can only speak of Malaysia. Hope this info is of use to you. David"
