Thank you John for posting that wonderful article about Derek O'Brien. I well recall how devastated my grandfather, James J. Stroud, a former BI Army Sergeant and bandmaster in the Viceroy's band in the early 1900s, was when the news of the partition of India and Pakistan was made known in Australia. He held a deep regard for India all his life, as did his wife (an English lass who sailed off to India as a "Lady's Companion" around the turn of the century) Occasionally I meet people here in Adelaide, Sth Aust. who had links back to that era who also speak so highly of their experiences in India.
