Topic: A mailing List for anyone who is interested in all things belonging to the period of time known as that of The British Raj. It is not to be confused with the India List, which caters for those interested in the tracing of British and European Ancestors in British India. Rather it covers the cultural aspects of that period of time. You are now part of a mailing list for people researching their European or Anglo-Indian ancestors in the former British territories of INDIA (including modern Pakistan, Bangladesh and Burma/Myanmar), and Ceylon. You might like to keep this message for future reference. Malaysia and the present Indonesia in olden times, might often get a mention. The INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ Lisat has been created to cater for all those questions that never seemd to be right when placed in the India list. The INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List was founded by John Feltham, of Townsville, North Queensland, Australia. The List was started on the 1st January 2005. The present INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List Administrator is John Feltham, of Townsville, North Queensland, Australia., You can write to him at INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-admin@rootsweb.com. Therefore, we've have created this List. Before you post a message, you might like to ask yourself if it is likely to interest other members of the mailing list, or whether you are better off sending the message directly to the individual concerned. As a rule of thumb, *questions* should always be posted to the list, in order to reach the maximum number of people, but answers are *sometimes* better sent to an individual. Here are some guidelines THINGS TO SEND TO THE WHOLE LIST 1. All queries and questions, whether of a general or specific nature. 2. Replies to queries of a general nature. For example, tell the whole list about - sources for certain records - meanings of unfamiliar words - useful web sites you've found - occupational information - tips on solving a problem 3. Remember, others might be interested in your responses, that how Lists work. We learn from each other. THINGS TO SEND TO AN INDIVIDUAL SUBSCRIBER 1. Replies to specific queries, or discussion of individual family issues (e.g. is my Aunty Gertrude related to your Uncle Blinky?) 2. Queries or anecdotes not related to INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ in some way 3. Specific details of holdings (e.g. here is a list of all persons surnamed Bazalick in the cemetery at ...) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WARNINGS Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, jokes, political announcements, current events, items for sale, flames, etc., (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED. The posting to the List of any messages about anything to do with a Virus, is FORBIDDEN, on pain of being ex-communicated. If you must send a msg about a virus, then you may send it to the List Admin. It is not the responsibility of the List Administrator to unsubscribe you. That is your responsibility. Please do not write your messages, all in Capitals or in Lower case letters. There are a lot of Listers who find it extremely hard to read messages written in one or the other. So much so that they just don't read the msg at all. If you are not sure whether a msg is suitable for posting in the INDIA- BRITISH-RAJ List, send it as private email to the Administrator. In the past, INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ Listers have been removed from the INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List for not complying with the rules. No notice of your removal will be given. Generally, the INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List is a friendly List. We really don't want its friendliness endangered, so it is easier to remove those who only wish to be disruptive. It is STRONGLY recommended that when you reply to a message and send it to the list that you delete all parts of the original message that are not pertinent to your reply. The reason for this is to reduce the download time for those of our subscribers who live in parts of the world where internet time is both expensive and infrequent. NOTE: If another Listers sends you a private msg complaining about what you have written in the List, please forward that msg to the Administrator to deal with. It will save you having to deal with the pain (literally). Do not post messages that are likely to cause offense, nuisance or anxiety. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If you find that you are receiving too many emails, you might like to change to DIGEST mode, instead of LIST mode. DIGEST mode will bunch several messages together and send them as one message. To change, unsubscribe to LIST and subscribe to DIGEST. To unsubscribe from INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List, send a message to INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text (not even a signature block). To subscribe in DIGEST mode, send a message to INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-D-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command subscribe and no additional text. When you go on holidays, or wish to cease having the INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ messages sent to you for some time, you might like to unsubscribe. Later, when you return, you can re-subscribe again. If you change your email address *PLEASE* remember to unsubscribe from the INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ mailing list with your old address FIRST, otherwise the poor old list administrator will become swamped by bounce messages. If you have any queries, questions or suggestions about the administration of the list, or are having difficulty sending or receiving messages, please email us at: INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-admin@rootsweb.com Good luck with your research!
