24 August 2008 ODNB LIFE OF THE DAY The life of Sir William Hay Macnaghten baronet (1793-1841), administrator in India, envoy and minister to Kabul, was born at Fort William, Calcutta, on 24 August 1793, the second son of the sixteen children of Sir Francis Workman Macnaghten (1763-1843) of Dundarave, Antrim, and his wife, Letitia, eldest daughter of Sir William Dunkin, of Clogher, judge of the supreme court of Calcutta.
