    3. There WAS such a web site, I believe. I haven't visited it in ages and have forgotten the URL. Let me search my files. -- ---- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar ----- Original Message ----- From: "Graeme Simpson" My wife likes to read books on the history and culture of India, both historical (Raj period) and more contemporary (post Independence period). She often comes across Hindi words (written in "Romanised" English) and wants to be able to find out the meaning of those she has not come across before. She has a copy of Hobson Jobson which helps sometimes, and has tried to get a useful dictionary, but they are written in Hindi word order - nice if you know Hindi but not much help if you don't. So I was wondering if anyone knows of a useful web site, book et al that provides the meaning of such "romanised" Hindi words?

    3. Hello list, In my search for my great-grandfather's death, I came across a possible match - except that the date of birth was six years later, which made me think it was the wrong person. Would a six year error be too much? My great grandfather married in England and was described as a "Writing Clerk". He then went out to India and my grandfather was born in Poona "in the Railway Department". The possible link I have found died in Jhelum, Bengal and was described as "Workman on P.N.L.Railway" My questions are:- (a) Would a "Writing Clerk" end up as a "Workman on the Railway" - or does it perhaps mean working in the Railway Department? (b) What is the P.N.L. Railway? I looked on Google and couldn't really get an answer. (c) Lastly: Was there a retirement home for Railway workers' families in Bangalore? Hopefully - Pam Harrison

    2. Arvind Kolhatkar
    3. Harshawardhan, What you write about the Hardayal Municipal Public Library does not present a surprize. Similar is the case with hundreds of 'Native General Libraries' started in the mid-19th century in District towns. Many of these have survived into modern times and are doing a reasonably good job of catering to the reading needs of the towns' populations. These libraries have tomes inherited from British days. Very naturally, the present-day readership is not much interested in them and they are languishing in dusty cupboards. They are also falling prey to dust, termites, dampness and other enemies of old books. A solution to save all such books and make them accessible to those interested is available now through digitization. However, there is hardly any awareness of it. There is an initiative called the 'Digital Library of India'. My experience of the DLI is dismal. Despite the backing of such prestigious academic institutions like IIT Bangalore, IIT Hyderabad, IUCA Pune the available work of the DLI is very unsatisfactory. 3. Hard times for 19th century library of over 8,000 rare books Aug 29, 2012 NEW DELHI: In the days of the Raj, when the English aristocracy travelled to India in the 18th and 19th centuries, they would often occupy themselves with books during the long sea journeys that could last over a month. Bulky tomes with heavy subjects were, evidently, a popular option. Close to 8,000 such books, donated by the British travelers, are currently housed in a corner of Chandni Chowk at the Hardayal Municipal Public Library, among the oldest in the city. Called the "rare books collection" they include a 1677 edition of Sir Walter Raleigh's History of the World and a Herodotus volume in the original Greek from 1826. But these books, like the library, are currently facing a threat.
