I am making a documentary film about the Story of Jazz in India . It is a labor of love and my passion for jazz and is an attempt to capture times gone by and the musicians and atmosphere of a lost era. Calcutta in the 50's and 60's was the jazz center of India and is a signifcant visual element of this film. I am trying to locate photos and archival memorablia of that time, particularly photos of the grand night clubs of the city - Scherezade, Princes, Winter Garden, and the musicians and entertainers. THe film trailer is available at the link below. I would very much appreciate being put in contact with any one you think might have a scrapbook of these memories..I would be particularly appreciative of locating any jazz musicians from Calcutta who might still have scrapbooks of their tenure.. nany thanks Susheel Kurien New York, NY +1 212 350 9398 -- Watch the trailer http://www.youtube.com/user/findingcarlton Become a friend http://www.facebook.com/pages/Finding-Carlton/114329996174 Read the blog http://bluerhythm.wordpress.com Susheel J. Dear Listers, According to a news item that appeared in the newspapers today, the Indian Government has approved a new symbol to represent the Rupee in national and international transactions. It is a combination of the Roman letter 'R' and the Devanagari letter 'ra', with two horizontal lines running through, the upper horizontal line also standing for the horizontal line from which all Devanagari letters hang. You can have a look at the symbol at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_rupee#New_Rupee_symbol . The Indian Rupee was so far designated as INR or Rs In due course of time software/hardware developers will design key-strokes or keyboards so that the symbol can be represented in computer-generated documents. India has thus joined a select group of currencies having their distinct symbols like the US dollar, the Euro, the British pound and the Japanese yen. Eventually, all countries with Rupee as the name of the currency, can adopt it by attaching their own prefixes to it. Arvind Kolhatkar, Toronto, July 15, 2010.
New Book - ''Empire and Globalisation: Networks of People, Goods and Capital in the British World, c.1850-1914'' By Gary B. Magee, Andrew S. Thompson [Cambridge University Press 314 Pages Publication Date 22-03-2010 ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0521898897 ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780521898898] Description: Focusing on the great population movement of British emigrants before 1914, this book provides a new perspective on the relationship between empire and globalisation. It shows how distinct structures of economic opportunity developed around the people who settled across a wider British World through the co-ethnic networks they created. Yet these networks could also limit and distort economic growth. The powerful appeal of ethnic identification often made trade and investment with racial 'outsiders' less appealing, thereby skewing economic activities toward communities perceived to be 'British'. By highlighting the importance of these networks to migration, finance and trade, this book contributes to debates about globalisation in the past and present. It reveals how the networks upon which the era of modern globalisation was built quickly turned in on themselves after 1918, converting racial, ethnic and class tensions into protectionism, nationalism and xenophobia. Avoiding such an outcome is a challenge faced today. --- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar
Gordon's ''Sirmoor'' reminded me of this: The Sirmoor Battalion (later to become 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles) was the first Gurkha regiment to be formed by the British East India Company. Sirmoor Battalion took part in the 3rd Maratha War in between 1817-1818, The British eventually triumphed, and the once mighty Maratha Empire was absorbed into 'British India', leaving Britain in control of virtually all of present-day India. http://dev.ayo-gorkhali.org/index.php/en/timeline/soldiers-of-empire/1817-the-third-maratha-war --- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar
Some lovely old pictures, articles here - *** KOTGARH, a small hamlet in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is around 10 km from Narkanda. Surrounded by the Himalayas, the town is famous for its apples, but a less known fact is that Kotgarh was one of the earliest mission stations of North India, the history of which is gathering dust in the mission archives. A visit to the place rekindled my interest on this neglected topic. *** http://www.kotgarh.in/page/3/ --- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar

Hi all, I have just joined the list and am trying to trace my family back through the Raj period from about mid 1800's to 1950. Both sides of the family were born and raised over 3 generations (Oakley and Fleming) and were based in the mountain resort town of Mussoori near the Himalayan border. Is there some kind of registrar or list of British citizens living in India during this period? On the off-chance that Greg's search finds mention of a Major Harry Barlow, living in Sirmoor and dying in Nahan in July 1909, I would be grateful to hear of it. He was my grandfather's first-cousin; and his death notice in "The Times" described him as "tutor/companion to the son of the Maharaja of Sirmoor". He was buried in Delhi; a family report has it that he died of cholera on the train from Nahan to join his wife in Bombay. Thanks for any help - and good luck, Greg. ----- Original Message ----- From: "sudhir ferris" <[email protected]> I am trying to contact an old friend who used to be a famous jazz singer from Calcutta (Pam Crain). It would be awesome if I could get in touch with her as we have been out of touch for nearly 30 yrs. I am in Canada now so do not have the local advantage of wonderful resources such as your organization. Any help would be appreciated. ------------------------------- I'm sure our knowledgeable members would be glad to help Sudhir. A simple Google search gives lots of links, some latest, some old. This, from a four-year old story - ''Although she keeps travelling -- her daughter has moved to the UK and her mother lives in Las Vegas - Crain returns to the city of her birth where she feels her roots are.'' Saturday, October 21, 2006 http://www.telegraphindia.com/1061021/asp/calcutta/story_6896463.asp They are fond of Pam Crain in Calcutta - as this story dated 2 January 2010 shows: ''A Passage in Kolkata Kolkata's Park Street is the most iconic road in India. Bridging the gap between Warren Hastings and Buddhadeb, it is a celebration, and, alas, a tragedy.'' http://www.openthemagazine.com/article/art-culture/a-passage-in-kolkata And this, dated March 25, 2010 : http://www.hindustantimes.com/Flashback-Flury-s-glorious-days/Article1-523033.aspx Any input from our pals in Calcutta? --- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar
