    3. I enjoy maritime research and have a great friend who is happy to help out through her subscription to Ancestry which has just produced all these Navy Lists L (p). Guessing but this could be Lieut. Permanent (rather that a temporary wartime appointment) but I am not convinced of this. R.I.N. is Royal Indian Navy and not relevant to the 'P' Will get back to you, Chris via iPad On 14 Nov 2012, at 03:47, wantok@me.com wrote: > G'day Chris, > > On 14/11/2012, at 24:55 AM, Chris Woods <c.woods45@btinternet.com> wrote: > >> Progress: >> >> Carl Alfred Bloud: >> RN List Feb. 1944 Bloud C.A. @ Dalhousie L(p) RIN Seniority 7.9.1942 >> Jan 1945 ditto > > Many thanks for this investigative task that you have done. 3. Not as far as I know, however the R.N.Lists are accessible through subscription to Ancestry up to 1970 I believe, and it was through a friend who has subscription for his genealogy business that I was able to find out the recent info. Is there anything specific you are looking for? Don't forget that these lists do not include ordinary seamen by name, but only officers and Warrant officers. via iPad On 13 Nov 2012, at 19:45, Daphne Langlois <brinds@xtra.co.nz> wrote: > > > Chris, > > Is the Royal Navy List, Feb. 1944 able to be viewed online, please ? > > With thanks, > brinds > > --- > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    2. Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar
    3. Tuesday, November 13, 2012 The new Archbishop of Canterbury has an India connection. London: Bishop Justin Welby of Durham, the newly-appointed Archbishop of Canterbury (who will succeed the incumbent Archbishop Rowan Williams), has his roots in India. His great-grandfather Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler was the Governor of Central Provinces of British India (based in the state capital Nagpur) between 1925 and 1933. He was the father of noted British politician Rab Butler. ''The 56-year-old bishop of Durham will be the 105th man to sit on the throne of St. Augustine," The Guardian reported yesterday. More on Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler here = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montagu_Sherard_Dawes_Butler More on Bishop Justin Welby's India connexion = see this news report dated today, November 13, 2012, from the local English daily The Hitavada: online at http://www.ehitavada.com/site.home/paper_type/13/date/2012-11-13/page_no/1 and continued on http://www.ehitavada.com/site.home/paper_type/13/date/2012-11-13/page_no/2 ---- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar

    3. Not a lot to go on at the moment. I tired the basic search on http://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/default.asp This is not the most reliable of search engines, and charges for looking at anything in detailthey have found although such material is also usually in the public domain and is sometimes inaccurate. they have only 3x CARD in WW2: Peter Stanford Card Civilian War Dead 1942 Percy George Card Leading Seaman Royal Navy 1944 (this might or might not include Indian Royal Navy) Percy George Card Leading Signalman HMS Albatross 1944 (same as above) HMS Albatross was built 1928 for the Royal Australian Navy and transferred to the Royal Navy in 1939. She was a seaplane carrier. Deployed in Indian Ocean from June 1942 to Oct 1943 No mention of the I.R.N. Carl Bloud / Blood does not appear on this site but there is no guarantee that the site includes Royal Indian Navy personnel. I am still trying to find some Lists free online but so far without success for WW2. There is the www.navylistresearch.co.uk <http://www.navylistresearch.co.uk/> site which does have RN Lists up to and including WW2+. This charges an annual subscription of £10 and all Lists are fully searchable. Note that only officers and Warrant Officers will be named individually, although looking through my 1918 Navy List educators are also included. If there are any surviving relatives, you may be able to find their service records here: http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html The Royal Naval Museum also has copies of Navy Lists: www.royalnavalmuseum.org <http://www.royalnavalmuseum.org/> look for their info sheet on naval genealogical sources. CAB was a teacher of English Language and English Literature at Victoria School, Kurseong, West Bengal from 1936 until long after I left VS in 1953. He was known to have served in the RIN as an officer during WWII. Old boys and myself would be much obliged if you can turn him up as well. CAB was that unusual teacher who was well loved by all students, past and present. 3. I carry Violet Szabo's poem in my diary - according to an eye-witness at her execution she murmured these short verses immediately prior to her death in Ravensbruck, early Feb.1945:- "The life that I have is all that I have And the life that I have is yours. The love that I have of the life that I have Is yours and yours and yours. A sleep I shall have, a rest I shall have And death will be but a pause. For the years I shall have in the long green grass Are yours and yours and yours". Leopold Marks. 1. [INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ] Meaning of Hindi Words
    2. Graeme Simpson
    3. My wife likes to read books on the history and culture of India, both historical (Raj period) and more contemporary (post Independence period). She often comes across Hindi words (written in "Romanised" English) and wants to be able to find out the meaning of those she has not come across before. She has a copy of Hobson Jobson which helps sometimes, and has tried to get a useful dictionary, but they are written in Hindi word order - nice if you know Hindi but not much help if you don't. So I was wondering if anyone knows of a useful web site, book et al that provides the meaning of such "romanised" Hindi words? Thanks for any help on this. Graeme Simpson
