November 27, 2012 Book Review: Travelogue with history thrown in A house set apart, cream-coloured, with red tiles on a sloping roof, a dak bungalow seen somewhere in my childhood in the 1950s and identified as such by my father - this image came to mind with the title of this book . Written by Rajika Bhandari, it takes one back in time and space to these relics of the Raj, still in use, visual signs of a history presumably dead and done with. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-bookreview/travelogue-with-history-thrown-in/article4138646.ece ---- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar
A recent documentary.... Sadly the Anglo-Indians had/have no collective unity, business sense nor impetus of hard labor to make a co-operative like McCluskiegunj work. I think the journalist hit it on the head when he compared them to the Parsi community and their ability to do this. Worth a watch! http://youtu.be/OBWdOO5hj8Y **

Can anyone tell be anything about this establishment in the early 19th century. I had heard that its pupils came from orphanages. Can anyone confirm this and if they were only from orphanages? Does anyone know of any lists of staff and pupils from that time? David

A note for all the Raj cookery buffs in the UK… From a correspondent…. Just to let you know that copies of "Moghul Cooking" by Joyce Westrip, are flying off the table at the British Library. They placed an initial order before the exhibition opened and re-ordered 20 copies a week after it opened; and now, exactly a week later, they're re-ordered again. I've had various books Mark Grant's Roman Cookery on sale during major exhibitions at the British Museum and elsewhere, and they've always done well, but Moghul Cookery's initial sales at the British Library are the best I've known at an exhibition - and, now that we're in the run-up to Christmas, I'm confident that it'll do very well over the next few weeks. Furthermore, our good friends in Adelaide, Wakefield Press, have almost run out of copies, so I'll be sending them a consignment that'll be leaving in the not too distant future. All of which adds up to my almost certainly pressing the button for a reprint at some point early-ish in the New Year! ooroo
Be very wary of burialsinindia.net I have been told that much of the information on this website is misleading. I don't know what the current position is but I do know that earlier this year the Christian Burials Board in India who had contracted these people to provide this service were in dispute with them. I would not use this website. Dear Listers, am posting this on behalf of my wife who was living in Ranchi around 1960-1963 and is searching for a lady by the name of Arlene Phillips who was probably about 7-8 years her senior. Arlene was friends to my wife Christina, her sister and brother Lynette and Michael King and her family when they were posted in Ranchi. Recent review of nostalgic photographs with Arlene and the King family has prompted this post. We would love to get in touch if anyone knows of Arlene's whereabouts. Kind Regards Kerry Canberra IF YOU FORWARD MY EMAILS AS A COURTESY PLEASE REMOVE ALL PRECEDING EMAIL ADDRESSES INCLUDING MINE. BLIND COPY (bcc) IF YOU CAN AS IT AVOID SPAMMERS USING ADDRESSES.
