    1. [INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ] Sparks fly in debate on imperialism
    2. Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar
    3. March 07, 2014 DUBAI: The impact of Western empires on colonies like India and other countries for over two centuries was debated on Thursday as two celebrated authors, with diametrically different views on imperialism, crossed ideological swords and sharp words at the sixth edition of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. Celebrated British author Jeremy Paxman was pitted against Indian author Pankaj Mishra, whose latest book on political and social history From the Ruins of Empire: The Revolt Against the West and the Remaking of Asia, has critically re-evaluated the events of the past two centuries. 2. Kerry Edwards
    3. Dear Listers, your help would be appreciated in checking other online sources - I only have access to the 'free' services of LDS Family Search and British Library both of which has proved unsuccessful. The gaps in this family are puzzling to say the least. 1. From the original baptism register of St Mark's Cathedral Bangalore, at George Hubert's baptism, his father George Frederick is shown as Inspector of Police Mysore at 2.2.1899. Does anyone know if there are 'service' directories (ala ones in Hyderabad showing appointments to the Nizam's service) to show when he may have been appointed to that service? George died 25 June 1914 in Hyderabad. Baptism: George Hubert Edwards s/o George Frederick & Isabella Marion Jane Edwards b 2.2.1899 - Inspector of Police Mysore. 2. I am also trying to locate his wife's maiden name.....Isabella Marion Jane (?) no date/place of marriage is known although the first child was born in 1885 so the marriage could have been anytime before that. 3. Any other help on the marriage(s), burials of the siblings would be appreciated. 1 George Frederick Edwards b: 14 October 1851 in Madras d: 25 June 1914 in Hyderabad .. married Isabella Marion Jane (?) b: Unknown m: Unknown d: Unknown *Children* .. 2 Helen Stella Edwards b: 1885 ...... married Alric De Prazer b: 1884 m: 21 February 1906 in Hyderabad .. 2 Elizabeth Isabella Edwards b: 11 December 1886 in Belgaum *Father*- Abode: Belgaum Trade: Sergeant, 1st Batt. 2. Kerry Edwards
    3. Thanks to Harsha, I tracked down the 'train scene' from the Hindi film Teezari Manzil .... (mute the sound if you don't want to hear hideous laughter or Hindi dialogue), the carriage is exactly the one I was looking for...it was possibly a 6 berth where the film crew had camped to film the shot! Nostalgic memories. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5ybeCT8xCk Thanks everyone for their help and comments. Kind Regards Kerry

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerry Edwards" <> does anyone have a photo(s) of *the inside of the old style 1st class 'bogie*' (4/6 berth carriage) circa 1940s/50s/60s? The one I am after is the one that had an 'ensuite' within the carriage and the door(s) opened onto the platform before they were replaced with the 'corridor' type 1st class bogies. One of the NSGR (Nizam's State Guaranteed Railway) would be great, however any other would be also suitable. ===================================== Kerry, my best suggestion at this moment is you try contacting a gentleman called John Lacey. He has supplied many an old image (of the type you want) to the picture gallery of the Indian Railways enthusiasts' group IRFCA. If you get in touch with the administrator of that group, he or some other member may help you either himself or give you the contact details of this John Lacey. Please do tell us what happens. Here is the link to IRFCA's online photo gallery featuring Carriage Interiors = http://www.irfca.org/gallery/Carriages/CarriageInteriors/ You'll not find there what you are looking for but it'll give you an idea. I am very sure I have seen some of these old first class coaches at least on two or three occasions in my childhood. Of course the 'corridor' type 1st class was what we were used to before it was abolished. Along with the long-gone second class sleepers, they too have become a distant memory. And the old third class has now been renamed second class. Again, I cannot remember their names off-hand, but there are several Hindi movies (made in the 1940s/50s/60s) that have scenes showing these old carriages. I am trying to recollect whether it was a similar coach that was used for the opening scene of the celebrated Shammi Kapoor - Asha Parekh film Teesari Manzil (1965-ish). Will check. Lastly, those of you who have read Paul Scott's monumental tetralogy The Jewel in the Crown (the Raj Quartet) will remember the chapter in which the Colonel's train journey from Bombay with his daughter (after his release from the German internment and return to India) is described in minutest details, including the time when he visits the en-suite loo in the compartment of the 1st-class coach they are in. THAT is your carriage. Did they show this journey in the TV series? Best, ---- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar

    2. Butler family and enterprise
    3. As I remember the TV series Jewel in the Crown (from 30 years ago) there was no railway journey for Sarah Layton (Geraldine James) with her returning father, Colonel Layton. For all the trouble his wife and daughters had piled up for him while he was away, I thought the story line at the end gave him too little attention. Earlier we saw Sarah in her railway sleeper returning from her ruthless seduction in the seedy glamour of wartime Calcutta. I think we saw nothing of the cabin she was in. I do not think we saw any of the interiors sought by Kerry Edwards. We did though enjoy the Nawab's state carriage (I hope I have the right titles here), grander than whatever would have been offered the ordinary railway traveller. I think always at night, we saw the Nawab's wily chef de cabinet Count Bronowski (Eric Porter) and the British Political Officer Captain Rowan (Nichols Prevost) plotting and negotiating in the greatest luxury. I read that the exterior shots of the series were all taken on location in India, while the interiors were all created in a studio in England. I would be sorry if this carriage was merely a figment of a set-designer's imagination. 2. And, further to Kerry’s description, if one was in the position of a senior officer on the Railways, one could order a saloon car (I believe it was called) with a pantry and kitchen and servant’s quarters attached. One had to inform somebody of the places to be visited - I believe we were coupled to a main line and on reaching our destination, uncoupled and shunted on to a short length of rail (?). Having spent as many days as one wished at this particular holiday spot, I can remember as a small child, the sound of heavy coupling and the hard chug and steam of another mainline train, taking us away to ….. wherever ! All this in the dark and I can still recall the wonder of it ! That was the E.I.R. 3. March 4, 2014 Calcutta: a jewel in the crown of British India Krishna Dutta's "Calcutta - A Cultural and Literary history", with a foreword by Anita Desai, gives us a kaleidoscopic view of the city with its multiple paradoxes, and a personal insight into its unique history in a moving manner. Colonial life Krishna Dutta's narration in nine chapters takes us through a journey of colonial life, educational and social reforms, literary peaks, political upheavals against the British, cultural empowerment and political history since independence to the fall of the Left in 2011. Among the many highlights of this book is the vivid description of Black Hole of Calcutta (a prelude to the Battle of Plassey) in which the then Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daula captured Fort William and confined 146 Britishers in a single window room measuring 14 feet by 18 feet on the night of June 20, 1756 from which only 23 came out alive. 1. [INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ] The Raj List - Rolls Royce in India

    3. G’day folks, I have just received this email and wondered how many of you have any Rolls Royce stories - in India? Answers to this list and to the address shown below. ooroo Begin forwarded message: From: John Fasal <jfasal@btinternet.com> Subject: The Indian Raj Date: 6 March 2014 7:06:22 am AEST To: "wantok@me.com" <wantok@me.com> Dear John Feltham, I gather you are a keen follower of the British Raj in India and I wonder if you can help me. For many years (since August 1967) I have had the pleasure of looking after the vintage Rolls-Royce cars for a number of the Princely families, mainly in Rajasthan. At the end of this year I plan to publish the definitive two volume work on 'Rolls-Royce & Bentleys in Princely India’. I have seen an interesting website on Jean Rae who's father Frank Ronald Rae was chauffeur to Lord Casey (Gov. of Bengal, 1944-46) and then the driver to Lord Mountbatten. I would be grateful to be put in touch with his daughter and learn more about her father's service in India and help identify various photos I have which could be her father in Simla. It would be a pleasure to meet you and show you our Durbar Hall, opened last year by the grandson of H.M. King George V. We have transformed our main central barn in Broxbourne, Herts. into the Durbar Hall which contains many framed portraits and photographs of the Maharajas and Nawabs 'dripping in diamonds' and their Rolls-Royce & Bentley cars. With kind regards and looking forward to hearing from you. John Fasal

    3. Hello Here's the extract of my mother's story "Petals in the Dust." I'm not sure who Uncle Raji or Uncle Hittie were - perhaps the sons of the then Maharaja in about 1913? Could anyone clarify? "The Cooch Behar’s were specialfriends of his (my mother's father) and were always at our tennis and other parties. ‘Uncle’ Raji was a special friend of mine andonce, when I was younger, asked me what I wanted as a present. ‘A diamond motor-car,’ I answeredpromptly. ‘First give me your medal?’ Uncle Raji would tease, winking at hisbrother, ‘Uncle’ Hittie sitting opposite. This was a toy from a Christmas cracker which he knew I would not partwith on any account. Whenever he askedthis question he knew I would slip off his knee and go and sit on UncleHittie’s. On this occasion it was no different; I immediately forgot all about thefanciful car studded with diamonds. Mymedal was far more precious to me, and althoughI didn’t part with it anyway, his gift did arrive some months later – a goldRolls Royce in miniature with a diamond set in the centre of each wheel!
