    3. Now THIS is nostalgia - although with a commercial touch. A new restaurant has come up in Adelaide, Australia. It's called ''British India'', and sports a stylish British Raj theme setting the kitchen tone with soft-focus curries and Anglo-Indian dishes. Obviously I'm interested only in the quaint idea of it all, and have no truck with it. But if one of you gourmets would like to give it a try, here is a report you may find useful. 3. G'day folks, Seeing as we have a bit of quiet on the List at the moment, I thought now would be a good time to announce that I have, after nearly four years, decided to take a rest from the Admin duties of The Raj List. Some of you will recall that I also ran the India List for some years. Accordingly I have asked Harshawardhan if he would take up the duties of Administrator. He of course has consented, thus saving me a large bag of cash in order to travel to Nagpur, to twist his arm severely. This List will be four years old at the end of this year. I thank all Listers for their membership and their inputs over many subjects for the life of this List. I will retain ownership of the List and naturally I will assist Harshawardhan if needed. I don't think that I will be needed, but the thought will help him. I am not leaving the List just taking a back seat. I do hope that you give Harshawardhan your support, he has as we all know, been a big contributor to this List. All yours now Harshawardhan. ooroo If you don't hear the knock of opportunity - build a door. Anon.

    3. Re-posting The Raj Welcome Msg From: "John Feltham" Subject: Number 1 Welcome Msg Date: Sat, 01 Jan 2005 IMPORTANT This Welcome Msg has been written based upon the experiences of Listers, in Rootsweb Lists. First, read this message - if you don't, you will not be able to claim that you did not know. Secondly - print it out and keep the printout in a safe place - you will not be able to claim that you don't have a copy of the "Welcome Msg". Thirdly - make sure that you have carried out the first and seond instructions before continuing. Now, down to the nitty-gritty. :-) The INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ A sincere Welcome to the INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ mailing list! Topic: A mailing List for anyone who is interested in all things belonging to the period of time known as that of The British Raj. It is not to be confused with the India List, which caters for those interested in the tracing of British and European Ancestors in British India. Rather it covers the cultural aspects of that period of time. You are now part of a mailing list for people researching their European or Anglo-Indian ancestors in the former British territories of INDIA (including modern Pakistan, Bangladesh and Burma/Myanmar), and Ceylon. You might like to keep this message for future reference. Malaysia and the present Indonesia in olden times, might often get a mention. The INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ Lisat has been created to cater for all those questions that never seemd to be right when placed in the India list. The INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List was founded by John Feltham, of Townsville, North Queensland, Australia. The List was started on the 1st January 2005. The present INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List Administrator is John Feltham, of Townsville, North Queensland, Australia., You can write to him at INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-admin@rootsweb.com. There is a good chance that your question has been asked, and answered before. So we can suggest that you search our archives at this web address. http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=INDIA-BRITISH- RAJ (Make it one of your favorites on your Web Browser). To send a message to all subscribers send it to the address INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-L@rootsweb.com. We suggest that your first message should be a short introductory piece, describing your family history in INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ and mentioning specific names, dates and places in which you are interested. You might have a distant relative on the list! It will help us to help you if you sign your message with your name, location and e-mail address. IF YOU WANT OUR LIST MEMBERS TO READ YOUR MESSAGE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FILLED THE 'SUBJECT BOX' WITH THE FAMILY NAMES AND/0R DATES AND PLACE IF KNOWN : An example John SMITH or SMITH FAMILY, 1800 CALCUTTA. PLEASE DO NOT JUST PUT 'HELP' IN THE SUBJECT BOX. It annoys other Listers and you will not receive any responses. Notice that the first names are in Lower Case while the SURNAMES are all in Capitals. Therefore, we've have created this List. Before you post a message, you might like to ask yourself if it is likely to interest other members of the mailing list, or whether you are better off sending the message directly to the individual concerned. As a rule of thumb, *questions* should always be posted to the list, in order to reach the maximum number of people, but answers are *sometimes* better sent to an individual. Here are some guidelines THINGS TO SEND TO THE WHOLE LIST 1. All queries and questions, whether of a general or specific nature. 2. Replies to queries of a general nature. For example, tell the whole list about - sources for certain records - meanings of unfamiliar words - useful web sites you've found - occupational information - tips on solving a problem 3. Remember, others might be interested in your responses, that how Lists work. We learn from each other. THINGS TO SEND TO AN INDIVIDUAL SUBSCRIBER 1. Replies to specific queries, or discussion of individual family issues (e.g. is my Aunty Gertrude related to your Uncle Blinky?) 2. Queries or anecdotes not related to INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ in some way 3. Specific details of holdings (e.g. here is a list of all persons surnamed Bazalick in the cemetery at ...) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WARNINGS Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, jokes, political announcements, current events, items for sale, flames, etc., (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED. The posting to the List of any messages about anything to do with a Virus, is FORBIDDEN, on pain of being ex-communicated. If you must send a msg about a virus, then you may send it to the List Admin. It is not the responsibility of the List Administrator to unsubscribe you. That is your responsibility. Please do not write your messages, all in Capitals or in Lower case letters. There are a lot of Listers who find it extremely hard to read messages written in one or the other. So much so that they just don't read the msg at all. If you are not sure whether a msg is suitable for posting in the INDIA- BRITISH-RAJ List, send it as private email to the Administrator. In the past, INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ Listers have been removed from the INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List for not complying with the rules. No notice of your removal will be given. Generally, the INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List is a friendly List. We really don't want its friendliness endangered, so it is easier to remove those who only wish to be disruptive. It is STRONGLY recommended that when you reply to a message and send it to the list that you delete all parts of the original message that are not pertinent to your reply. The reason for this is to reduce the download time for those of our subscribers who live in parts of the world where internet time is both expensive and infrequent. NOTE: If another Listers sends you a private msg complaining about what you have written in the List, please forward that msg to the Administrator to deal with. It will save you having to deal with the pain (literally). Do not post messages that are likely to cause offense, nuisance or anxiety. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If you find that you are receiving too many emails, you might like to change to DIGEST mode, instead of LIST mode. DIGEST mode will bunch several messages together and send them as one message. To change, unsubscribe to LIST and subscribe to DIGEST. To unsubscribe from INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List, send a message to INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text (not even a signature block). To subscribe in DIGEST mode, send a message to INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-D-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command subscribe and no additional text. When you go on holidays, or wish to cease having the INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ messages sent to you for some time, you might like to unsubscribe. Later, when you return, you can re-subscribe again. If you change your email address *PLEASE* remember to unsubscribe from the INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ mailing list with your old address FIRST, otherwise the poor old list administrator will become swamped by bounce messages. If you have any queries, questions or suggestions about the administration of the list, or are having difficulty sending or receiving messages, please email us at: INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ-admin@rootsweb.com Good luck with your research! NOW THAT YOU HAVE REACHED THE END OF THIS MESSAGE, PLEASE PRINT IT, AND KEEP IN A SAFE PLACE John Feltham INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ List Administrator 1st January 2005 =========================================================== --- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Feltham" I have, after nearly four years, decided to take a rest from the Admin duties of The Raj List. Accordingly I have asked Harshawardhan if he would take up the duties of Administrator. I will retain ownership of the List and naturally I will assist Harshawardhan if needed. I am not leaving the List just taking a back seat. I do hope that you give Harshawardhan your support. All yours now Harshawardhan. ======================================================== Oh dear, oh dear! I'm overwhelmed. First of all, a big basketful of thanks to John for considering me eligible for this duty. I'm not sure if I'm the right person - but now that I am left with no choice, I shall try to do justice to the best of my ability. Thanks also to all of you for your continued support to the list. Hope our association will grow stronger in the years to come. Let me make one thing very clear. I'm purely a locum tenens. This is John's list and will remain so. I'm here as Administrator simply for the time being, till John resumes his driver's seat. So there will no appreciable change in anything and we all must follow the rules and guidelines prescribed by John, to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the list, without any flame war on our hands. Everyone of you must have received his introductory message when you joined the group, and all that he has said in it, stands as it is. I'll post that message once again, in case somebody needs a re-look. I am confident of your cooperation and hope I won't have to put the Admin's hat on my rapidly balding head. In any case, it's my personal belief that moderators/ adminstrators should not be visible, unless it's really necessary, and that as members with mature heads on our respective shoulders, we are fully capable of obeserving rules. So, let's all commit ourselves once again to remain within the parameters prescribed by John. This list is for nostalgia, genealogical studies, as well as for discussing all aspects of the British Raj in India, as explained in the introductory message, and everybody who is interested in these matters is welcome here. We are an international list, so let's avoid doing anything that may hurt feelings or cause angry looks. I am always open to suggestions and would welcome any advice that you may wish to give me for making this list more popular. I'm also looking forward to the active participation of more members, so do keep writing. So, that's all, for the moment. Thanks everybody once again. Cheerio, --- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar
