    3. G'day folks, Just received a copy of this book from the Pagoda Tree Press - look them up on your friend and mine - Mr Google. John Saché was a photographer who appears to have travelled a lot around northern India from Calcutta to Naini Tal and Lucknow. The book contains some of the many photographs that he took during his time in India. I also received a small catalogue of books that are in print right now. Information on most of them can be found on the web site. Of interest to me is a book called "The Sardhana Pictures". When I left school I joined the British India Ship Navigation Company as a cadet Officer. My first ship was the MV "Sirdhana". I'll have to get the book now! :-) ooroo

    1. [INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ] Fwd: Senior Cambridge Examination
    2. Dear Listers, I had this reply from my Headmaster, David Stewart, of Mount Hermon School (1954 - 63), and hope it will clear up the question of Senior and Junior Cambridge Examinations. Jim Sinclair ----- "In my day, the Cambridge Exams (I don't know about JC, we only sent students up for SC) . the exams were world-wide, and were set and marked, as with, say, British students, by a Board in Cambridge. The name was something like "Local Examinations Syndicate" I remember the Anglo-Indian Inspector, West Bengal, telling me gleefully that the Indian students received an average grade for Religious Knowledge several grades higher than their British counterparts. This arrangement was changed somewhere in the late 60s, I think, for a Central Board in India to take ccntrol, most if not all papers being set in India, but I cannot give you more details. I think the HSC, which we sat, was still centred from Cambridge, but I am not sure if that later changed. I imagine an enquiry to the Registrar of University of Cambridge might elicit definite details. The interesting thing about Mount Hermon is that, although it was initially run by Americans, when it became Mount Hermon, if not before, they deliberately decided to follow the British system, and connect with Cambridge. Yes, I know Malaysia used Cambridge, and I guess other British-connected states like Ceylon and Burma and maybe Hong Kong. But from personal knowledge I can only speak of Malaysia. Hope this info is of use to you. David"

    2. Hello Sally - Nice to hear from you again. This topic is quite interesting. It would be nice to find out where these JC and SC examinations were set, whether by a Cambridge university or some other British Educational Board, and who and where they were corrected. Seems like the SC and JC examinations were the standard for South East Asia, as Wickipedia mentions they were available in Malysia too. Perhaps one of our clever researchers can find out more. I am copying this to my old school Headmaster who might be able to tell me more. 3. Listers Am I correct in my thinking that there were three copies made of our Cambridge papers during the war years? One to go by sea to the UK for marking and another to be retained for the school. Can't recall what contingency the third one was for (if there was a third copy). In any case, I am so impressed that the ships continued on through the Arabian sea during such fraught times. We who were at hill schools during 'those' times, seemed hardly if in fact in any way, affected by the raging wars on so many fronts. Corrections welcome.
