    1. [INDIA] POWIS, Harry Baden - Europeans in Indian Police?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: glenhodgins Surnames: Powis Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2817/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm currently researching *Harry Baden POWIS*, born c.1880 in Umbala (Ambala), India. I'm still piecing together his history, but it appears he: a) joined the Punjab Police prior to the Great War; b) served in the Indian Supply and Transport Corps (S&TC) during the Great War and the Third Afghan War; c) transferred to the Baluchistan Police sometime during the inter-war period (my gut instinct tells me this transfer would have occurred in the early-to-mid 1920s); d) retired from the police in the late 1930s (I think c.1937/38); moving to the Channel Islands. I was hoping I might be able to trace a bit of his police career via the various Civil Lists available on-line through the Indian Digital Library site, but I can't seem to find any Baluchistan or Punjab Civil lists. I'm quite certain Punjab produced provincial civil lists, but what about Baluchistan? Was Baluchistan a province? Did it produce a civil list? Of course, grateful for any assistance with respect to mapping out Powis's career with the Indian Police Service. PS: I found that Powis was awarded the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal in 1935 as: "Superintendent of Police for Zhob and Loralai, Baluchistan".
