However even if you find out details about his career, I think it is very unlikely you would find any information about "who his first wife was and if he had any children with her". If you were lucky you might find where he had come from. One of the links on the Fibiwiki page is a book by an author I. Tyrrell who joined the Madras Police in 1860. He had been in a British Army Regiment in India, so it is possible James Grant had a similar background. Coincidentally I. Tyrrell was appointed an Inspector of Police and went to Nellore, but I did not see a mention of James Grant in the chapters about Nellore.
