Hi to all the list my ancestor John Irons was a driver in the Artillery from about 1870 he was married at Roypettah to Clara Ann Palfrey. When he retired from Artillery he stayed in Madras area and worked as a railway /porter he died there in abt 1924 I just wanted to know was it common for retired personnel to stay in India? As some of his children went back to England kind thanks Caroline
I have ancestor who served as a gunner in the Royal Artillery in India 1874-1887. At conclusion of his service he remained in India as a guard on the Great Indian Peninsula Railway until 1896 when he returned to England with his family.
