Simply means "sent back to." Not necessarily as the result of a breach of discipline. Could be, for example, if new requirements were introduced for particular soldiers (e.g. physical characteristics, qualifications) then those not meeting them would be "remanded to" their original units.
Thank you Noel for your information. I am still puzzled as to why he was demoted to gunner, after previously being a Corporal. However, after a period of unemployment following his discharge because of ill health, he joined the Police Force as an Inspector, and later Bailiff in the Small Cause Court, so I guess it wasn't something of terrible consequence anyway.
