The enquirer might like to contact http://www.koi-hai.com/Default.aspx, a site dedicated to tea planters and plantations. I checked the Assam Tea Directory for 1949 and there is an entry for an "I. Johnston" at the Phaskowa Tea Plantation at Hatipotha (Hatipota). Other India Listers might be interested in the Koi-Hai website anyway.
